Town and Country Club Town and Country Club is a private social club founded in 1893. It is the second oldest woman’s club in the nation. During the 1906 earthquake and fire, the clubhouse was destroyed and the members sought new quarters on Union Square. The club moved in to the current clubhouse in 1909 when the building was rebuilt.

Position Title: Librarian

Position Summary

The Librarian oversees the Club’s library as a cultural, intellectual, and social resource for members. This role combines collection stewardship (curation), literary programming, member engagement, and coordination with the Club’s communications team. The Librarian manages acquisitions and cataloging, supports committees and archives, and collaborates with staff to ensure the library remains welcoming, current, relevant, and well utilized.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Library Operations & Collection Management

  • Select, acquire, catalog, and maintain library materials in alignment with collection goals
  • Maintain and expand the online catalog, including retrospective cataloging
  • Evaluate and responsibly weed the collection according to development policies
  • Monitor the library budget and Library Fund expenditures; recommend improvements or capital needs
  • Prepare monthly and annual reports on library usage, circulation, and acquisitions
  • Remain informed about publishing trends, notable titles, and book reviews

Programming & Member Engagement

  • Coordinate the monthly book group, including title selection and purchasing
  • Provide reader’s advisory and reference assistance to members
  • Prepare and distribute monthly new-acquisition notices and book group communications
  • Create displays, bibliographies, surveys, and other engagement initiatives
  • Ensure the library environment is welcoming, orderly, and inviting
  • Obtain and/or coordinate literary speakers, market and organize events related to visiting authors

Committee & Administrative Support

  • Support Book Selection meetings and Library Committee activities
  • Prepare agendas, minutes, and supporting materials for meetings
  • Develop policy recommendations for the Library Director and Committee
  • Assist the Literary Discussion Group Chair with communications, surveys, and summaries
  • Support the maintenance of Club archives

Club Collaboration

  • Provide book group notices and new acquisition highlights for the weekly newsletter and monthly bulletin
  • Contribute to Club communications, marketing projects, and publications as needed
  • Provide administrative support, including correspondence and data entry, when required
  • Participate in training, cross-department initiatives, and special projects
  • Foster a collaborative and service-oriented environment across the Club

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; library science, humanities, or related field preferred
  • Two to three years of relevant library or collection-management experience preferred
  • Knowledge of cataloging practices, acquisitions, and reference services
  • Strong organizational, project management, and budget awareness skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with publishing/design software preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Broad literary knowledge and enthusiasm for reading and discussion
  • Strong member-service orientation and hospitality mindset
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail
  • Experience in retail bookstore advantageous

  • Ability to move throughout the Club and library spaces to assist members and manage materials
  • Ability to handle, shelve, and transport books and materials, including occasional lifting of up to approximately 40 pounds
  • Ability to operate standard office and library equipment, including computers and scanners
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members, guests, and staff in person, by phone, and in writing
  • Ability to remain stationary or move about the workspace for extended periods as duties require

Schedule and Reporting

This is a full-time position typically scheduled Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with flexibility required based on Club operations and events. The Librarian reports to the General Manager and works collaboratively with managers, committees, and administrative staff.
