Librarian I salary range: $54,492 – $81,057
Librarian II salary range: $60,143 – $89,463

Job Description

The Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking an experienced professional to serve as the head Librarian of our Collection Management Services division.

The Librarian serves as a member of the library’s management team and represents the library in all system initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees library operations within the assigned area and addresses patron and staff complaints, problems, and conflicts.
  • Provides professional library services, including materials selection, cataloging, and maintaining the integrity of MARC records.
  • Prepares and maintains reports and records, including circulation statistics for state reporting.
  • Stays current with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in public libraries.
  • Co-creates and implements policies and procedures for the branch or unit with approval from library administration.
  • Manages unit scheduling, participates in staff meetings, and attends trainings, classes, seminars, and conferences for professional development.
  • Leads the reconsideration team in collaboration with library administration.
  • Manages the local author collection, including evaluating submissions and responding to author inquiries.
  • Maintains and monitors the collection management services budget and recommends allocations to administration.
  • Catalogs and trains staff on procedures for the Library of Things collection.
  • Ensures collections are diverse, equitable, inclusive, accessible, and reflective of the communities served.
  • Demonstrates experience working with an integrated library system (ILS), such as Koha.
  • Collaborates with CPL branches, conducting regular visits to analyze collections, review community trends, and interpret data to identify community needs and improve collection performance.
  • Ensures selected titles, subjects, and quantities meet both branch and systemwide demand, maintaining balance across interests, subjects, and formats.
  • Analyzes collection needs across branches and the system and collaborates with teams to redistribute resources when needed.
  • Modifies and creates original catalog records and performs classification and subject analysis using national cataloging and classification standards for various formats in both print and electronic environments.

Required Qualifications
Vocational/Educational Requirement:
Librarian I: Must be currently enrolled in a masters level Library Science degree program and must obtain a master’s degree in Library Science within 12 months of hire from a school accredited by the American Library Association
Librarian II: Requires an American Library Association accredited master’s degree in library science.
Librarian III: Requires an American Library Association accredited master’s degree in library science.

Experience:
Librarian I: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time library, customer service or library volunteer experience.
Librarian II: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time public library experience, including 1-year supervisory experience.
Librarian III: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of four years of related, full-time public library experience including two years of supervisory experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
Librarian I – III: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards.

Librarian I: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months after obtaining a master’s degree in library science.
Librarian II: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months of employment.
Librarian III: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience Requirement:
Librarian I:
  • No supervisory experience required, but one year is preferred.
Librarian II:
  • One year of supervisory experience required, but two years is preferred.
Librarian III:
  • Two years of supervisory experience required, but three or more years is preferred.

Experience with Microsoft Office Suite/Excel is preferred.
