ABOUT THIS POSITION


Phoenix Public Library serves a diverse multi-ethnic clientele of over 4.8 million people, with a central library and 16 branches. The library offers collections in multiple languages, a full range of cutting-edge electronic resources and customer focused public services. Librarians I perform entry-level professional library work by applying the full scope of basic library knowledge and techniques in the performance of duties. Work involves analyzing the public's library needs, maintaining library collections, applying bibliographic control techniques to library materials, advising the public in their use of digital and traditional library materials, creating and presenting library programs, and accurately responding to reference and information search requests.

General Branch Librarian I's assigned to the branches assist public service desks, provide reference service to customers using online and physical resources, and perform collection maintenance under the direction of the Branch Manager. Essential work functions include the use of Office 365 and cloud-based systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creating and providing programming and outreach to children, teens, and/or adults as assigned.
  • Supervise Library Pages, Circulation staff and/or Library Assistants and are responsible for scheduling and completing payroll for branch staff as assigned.
  • Serving as the Person-in-Charge of a branch when the manager or supervisor is not in the building, ensuring excellent customer service and enforcing policies and procedures.

Candidates are hired for system-wide positions and are required to move throughout the system based upon operational needs.

Work is performed in accordance with established policies and accepted library practices and procedures.

Some positions will require the performance of other essential projects depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.

IDEAL CANDIDATE


The ideal candidate has the ability to:

  • Provide reference and customer assistance through digital means.
  • Educate the public on the use of computers, tablets and electronic resources.

SALARY


Pay Range: $24.93 to $44.77 per hour.

Hiring Range: $24.93 to $33.41 per hour.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 053. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution.
  • OR Master's degree in an educational field such as Education, Humanities, or Social Sciences.
  • OR Master's degree in Business, Sciences, or Law.
  • Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Experience with:

  • At least one year of experience building programs and presenting with a focus on two of three age groups (children, teen/tween, adult).
  • Customer service experience that includes providing information, educating, or solutions.
  • Professional library experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Bi-Lingual in Spanish is desirable.
