Library Assistant

General Statement of Duties:

Performs a wide variety of general library work. Assists Patrons and performs daily operations such as cataloging, processing, circulation and shelving library materials; performs related duties as assigned. Works under the general supervision of the Library Director.

Hours of Work:

This is a 20 hour per week position. This position will have set hours per day as established by the Library Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

A Library Assistant has various duties and responsibilities to take care of in their job. These duties are important in order to keep the library running smoothly as they assist the Librarian. These include entry-level support for library operations, assisting patrons with resources, maintaining the collection by shelving and organizing materials, processing new items, and performing various clerical and housekeeping duties. This includes checking out books, issuing library cards, helping patrons with technology and digital resources, answering phones, and ensuring the library is tidy and welcoming for all users.

Key Responsibilities

● Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System and Library organization via ALA standards.

● Loan library materials such as books and DVDs to patrons and collect the returned materials.

● Maintain the general cleanliness and organization of the library, including straightening shelves and maintaining public areas.

● Catalog, maintain, and process the library materials.

● Handle loans between libraries.

● Organize and reshelve returned items such as periodicals, books ect.

● Handle the registration of new library cardholders and issue library cards.

● Teach people how to use the library resources and answer questions from patrons.

● Perform routine tasks such as answering phone calls and organizing files.

● Use and maintain computer library databases to help locate library materials.

● Help plan and participate in special library events such as children's events, movie nights, used book sales or other special programs the library may offer.

Required Skills and Qualities

1. Interpersonal Skills: A friendly, approachable demeanor and strong communication skills to interact effectively with the public.

2. Organizational Skills: Excellent ability to sort, catalog, and maintain order within the library's collection. (Dewey ALA standards)

3. Detail-Oriented: Pays close attention to detail when handling materials, cataloging, and managing records.

4. Computer Literacy: Basic knowledge of computers and an ability to learn the library's specific software and databases.

5. Customer Service: Experience in customer service is often beneficial for assisting patrons. Willingness to learn new skills.

  • The Library Aide ensures the smooth and efficient operation of the Library and performs work as required or assigned by the Library Director.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with others
  • Must be proficient in English and Spanish
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions and complete assigned tasks with little supervision.
  • Strength and ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Must have the agility to stoop, stretch and climb stairs in order to retrieve and replace materials.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $10.00 per hour
