POSITION SUMMARY
This is routine technical and clerical work in the Township Library. Library Assistant I is an entry level paraprofessional position providing direct service to library patrons. The Library Assistant performs a variety of routine clerical and manual work in automated circulation and processing of library materials and assists in maintaining Library collections by shelf-reading and shelving materials. This position works under the direct supervision of the Circulation Coordinator. Work involves some initiative and independent judgment and is regularly reviewed in progress.
Work is performed during regularly scheduled hours and may involve additional hours as needed.
The position is nonexempt under the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform circulation procedures on the library automated system including check out, return, fines, reserves, and patron registrations.
- Pull items on daily paging list and work at the shipping desk processing incoming and outgoing materials.
- Assist in maintaining library collection by shelf-reading in assigned areas and shelving books.
- Answer telephone calls and provide circulation and program information and assist or refer patrons as appropriate.
- Empty book drop.
- Foster a welcoming and harmonious environment for staff, patrons, and visitors through positive communication and collaboration.
- Other tasks as directed by the Circulation Coordinator.
QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of computers and electronic data processing to ensure success with the library circulation software.
- Working knowledge of library classification systems and basic office procedures.
- Ability to work independently and to handle multiple tasks and interruptions.
- Ability to carry out moderate tasks with accuracy critical to the success of the task.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate orally and in writing in the English language.
- Ability to plan, organize and complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion.
- Ability to organize and maintain records and files.
- Ability to analyze and prepare reports.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to operate the tools and equipment listed below.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality where necessary.
Education, Experience & Certifications
- High school degree.
- PA Mandated Reporter certification
- PA Criminal Record check
- PA Child Abuse Clearance
- FBI Clearance (fingerprints)
EQUIPMENT USED
- Personal computers and printers, telephone, copier, calculator, and automobile.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is often required to sit, walk, use hands and fingers to operate equipment, reach and/or bend at the knees.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move lightweight equipment such as terminals and printers. The employee must be able to drive a car.
- The ability to talk, hear and see, as in reading, computer operation, location of library materials, and focusing on staff and patrons, are essential.
