SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

When assigned to a middle or high school: Under the general direction of a Teacher Librarian, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a school library. Incumbent performs related work as required in the school library.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Library Operations & System Management

Operates the library automation system to manage circulation of books and materials.

Catalogs new materials, deletes outdated or lost items, and updates patron information as needed.

Utilizes computers and library technology for daily tasks and resource management.

Assists in the annual inventory of the collection, including mending, shelving, and filing materials.

Student & Staff Support

Develops a climate encouraging teachers and students to make optimal use of the library media center.

Assist students in locating research and reading materials while teaching library skills.

Instructs students and staff in the use of library technology, online catalogs, and the Internet.

Supports teachers in selecting books and digital resources to enhance curriculum and learning.

Promotes and supports Information Literacy standards across grade levels.

Library Environment & Programs

Maintains an attractive and inviting library environment through book displays, exhibits, and bulletin boards.

Participates in school literacy initiatives, including Nevada Reading Week activities.

Collaboration & Volunteer Support

May train and supervise student and parent volunteers.

Collaborate with teachers and staff to support instructional goals and library usage.

Professional Development & School Duties

Attends and participates in Library Services training programs as required.

Assists with regularly scheduled school-site duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and skills would be:

Education: Equivalent to a high school diploma. Coursework in library science is desirable.

Experience: One (1) year of entry level library experience or two (2) years of responsible clerical experience.

Education: Equivalent to two (2) years of college (48 semester credits) from an accredited college or university, including 21 semester hours in a District-recognized librarianship program (a combination of university and up to nine in-service credit hours is acceptable)

Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible school library experience.

New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step (step one) of the grade of the position. Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. View salary schedules here.

This position is a One Year Only position ending June 2027.

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting . Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
