SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Library Clerk reports to the Library Director and provides high‑quality customer service while performing a wide range of clerical and paraprofessional duties within the Laguna Vista Public Library. This position supports daily circulation operations using the library’s web‑based platform, assists patrons with accessing library resources and basic computer skills, and contributes to cataloging tasks, including data entry, material organization, processing donations, relabeling, and handling withdrawals. The role also actively participates in children’s and adult programming, event promotion, and general patron interaction, while helping maintain a welcoming, positive, and efficient environment for patrons, staff, volunteers, and city personnel.
DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- · Oversee daily circulation desk operations, including checkouts, check-ins, fines, fees, overdue notices, and drop-box materials.
- · Maintain accurate circulation records, daily reports, patron accounts, and collection databases.
- · Provide in-person, phone, email, and chat customer service; answer questions, explain policies, and provide reference assistance.
- · Register new patrons, issue library cards, manage computer sign-ins, and assist with public computer and equipment use.
- · Coordinate and process interlibrary loan (ILL) requests, returns, and related communications.
- · Manage meeting room bookings and assist with copy, print, fax, and cash register transactions.
- · Shelve, sort, file, and maintain library materials according to classification systems; shelf read for accuracy and re-shelve misplaced items.
- · Retrieve materials from public and non-public stack areas and search for lost or missing items.
- · Process, catalog, label, repair, relabel, shift, withdraw, and prepare books, media, and other materials for circulation.
- · Receive, sort, organize, and manage donated materials, including preparation for Book Store sales.
- · Assist with ordering supplies and collection materials; receive and process deliveries and incoming mail.
- · Pack, unpack, box, bundle, and distribute materials for mailing or transfer to other library agencies.
- · Troubleshoot circulation and public computers; perform routine maintenance and load paper and toner; report repair needs.
- · Support library marketing, public relations, outreach, website content, social media, graphic design, and creation of flyers, brochures, and pamphlets.
- · Engage in photography, photo editing, videography, and video editing using software such as Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Illustrator.
- · Assist with monthly calendars and promotional materials for library events and activities.
- · Assist with children’s programming, general library programming, city events, and event planning meetings.
- · Open and close the library following established procedures.
- · Supervise volunteers and community service workers.
- · Act on behalf of the Director when assigned and perform additional duties as required.
- · Maintain clean, organized, and safe workspaces; sanitize materials and equipment as needed.
- · Continuously improve operations, streamline processes, and collaborate to provide high-quality customer service.
- · Contribute to overall facility maintenance and foster positive relationships with patrons to enhance their library experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- · High School Diploma or equivalent; or six (6) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- · 1 year of experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- · Valid Texas Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is frequently required to make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements, such as checking in books and operating a computer keyboard; bend or stoop repeatedly; the employee must be able to lift at least 25 pounds and remain in a standing position for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
