WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is performed in an office environment; is subject to sitting most of the time, standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods of time; and must be able to safely pull, push, lift, and carry items weighing up to 10 pounds occasionally;
  • Demonstrate patience and flexibility in changing job demands and when interacting with employees, visitors, and the public;
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in written form;
  • Work with frequent interruptions;
  • Maintain effective working relationships and represent the City in a positive manner at all times while engaged with City staff and Citizenry;
  • Requires the flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required;

Under the general direction and supervision of the Library Manager and Librarians, the Library Clerk assists the city library in customer service duties, daily operations, administrative functions, and general office duties. This position involves extensive contact with the public and may include special projects at the direction of the Library Manager.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists patrons in locating desired materials through the card catalog or computer terminal;
  • Assist patrons who are working in the computer lab;
  • Arranges and shelves books;
  • Checks materials in and out;
  • Collects fines for overdue and lost materials;
  • Prepares billing for overdue and lost materials;
  • Verifies accuracy of application information for library cards;
  • Issues library cards;
  • Provides information on reference requests from patrons;
  • Clears and logs-in overnight book drop.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in written form;
  • Basic computer skills.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or GED;
  • Must be 18 years or older;
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in the English language.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior library or related field experience;
  • Bilingual.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable and proven proficiency levels in the above required knowledge, skills, abilities, or education, training, or licensing could be considered as a possible substitute for the above industry-specific training or experience requirements for this position.
