General Summary



Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for a Library Maintenance position at the Central Library who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other.

The preferred starting salary for this position is $15.75 hourly ($32,760 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience and internal equity. This position performs semi-skilled and clerical duties providing routine maintenance and repairs for upkeep of Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) facilities and equipment, under the general supervision of the Assistant Library Director.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Performs routine preventive maintenance and repairs on library facilities and equipment.
  • Performs mail metering, courier service, and receiving, inspecting, and delivering incoming materials.
  • Cleans buildings and grounds.
  • Maintains grounds, including mowing.
  • Removes snow or debris from sidewalks and other areas, as needed.
  • Empties and disposes of trash as needed.
  • Operating a vehicle to perform job responsibilities.
  • Coordinates with City maintenance workers and outside contractors.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

Education and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.


  • Completion of seventh grade and three months of building maintenance experience.
OR
  • 2 years of building maintenance experience.
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Job Knowledge
  • General knowledge of building cleaning practices, occupational hazards, supplies, and equipment, and safety precautions in providing preventative maintenance and cleaning.
  • Working knowledge of the potential risks of exposure to bodily fluids and working knowledge (and use of) personal protective equipment.
Reading
  • Basic: Understands the meaning of commonly used multi-syllable words and simple paragraphs. Comprehends simple written instructions, signs, and notices.
Writing
  • Basic: Ability to write simple letters, paragraphs and sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.
Math
  • Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Communication Skills
  • Routine: Examples include regular and routine interaction involving providing or exchanging information. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers.
Independence and Decision-Making
  • Requires General Direction: normally performs the job by following general instructions or established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is some discretion when making decisions among a few easily identifiable choices of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance is reviewed frequently.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical Demands

  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Work requires bending, stooping, walking (ascending/descending steps), and or standing.
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:
  • Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.
Work Environment
  • The work is subject to both inside and outside environmental and atmospheric conditions, moderate noise, may be exposed to extreme temperatures and hazardous substances.
  • The position works:
    • Near moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.
    • In and around dust/dirt, odors, fumes and/or airborne particles.
    • In and around toxic chemicals.
    • In and around confined spaces.
