The Shrewsbury Public Library is seeking a Library Professional Associate - Reference Librarian to join our dedicated team. This key position plays a vital role in connecting the Shrewsbury community to valuable resources. Working as a part of the Adult Services team, you will help create programs, market library resources, teach library technology classes, all while providing a high level of customer service.

This position includes a work schedule with one night per week and Saturdays on a

rotating basis. You will assume a supervisory role during night and weekend shifts, providing leadership and ensuring a smooth operation.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work with patrons to help locate materials, assist with public access computers, manage study room bookings, and assist with troubleshooting personal devices.

  • Work closely with the other SPL Reference Librarian to ensure top-notch consistent customer service. Regularly review Reference Desk standard operation procedures to create a cohesive department.
  • Host regular sessions to educate patrons about library resources including Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy.
  • Work collaboratively with the Adult Services team to create a diverse listing of programs.
  • Assist with the creation of marketing materials, including the print monthly calendar, and social media posts.
  • Help public service staff understand reference desk responsibilities and procedures, contributing to efficient library operations.
  • Continuously enhance your professional knowledge and skills by staying updated on library trends, best practices, and emerging technologies.


What We’re Looking For:

  • ALA accredited Masters of Library and Information Sciences Degree; two years of professional experience in library reference services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency with ILS (preferably Evergreen).
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping.
  • Knowledge of library practices and procedures, and the ability to manage materials effectively.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to foster positive relationships with colleagues, vendors, and patrons.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
