Description of Work

SALARY RANGE: $20,717.00 - $30,804.00

The North Carolina Supreme Court Library seeks a qualified Library Technical Assistant to process materials, and maintain and update existing collections.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Retrieve and open mail; check-in materials electronically via acquisition databases; file new materials; prepare materials for cataloging; and label materials with appropriate classification numbers or designations.
  • Shelve materials; assist in inventories; track orders; and verify shipments.
  • Complete minor preservation procedures on heavily used materials; process shipments from the Government Printing Office; and prepare shipments for the bindery.
  • Shift bound volumes of collection; prepare superseded materials for disposition; and move shelving, furniture, and equipment in the library facility.
  • Open and close the library, when so scheduled.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

This position reports to the Supreme Court Librarian. Work hours are as scheduled, Monday - Friday.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities/ Competencies

Knowledge of: acquisition procedures for serials collections and/or basic cataloging practices; detailed filing instructions from various vendors/publishers.

Skill in: organization; basic computer use; use and maintenance of office equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, and scanners; and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to: follow standard library methods and principles; compile data for statistical records; learn specific software programs, including proprietary database and office software; follow very specific instructions and guidelines for filing purposes; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and lift and move books and furniture.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in library science or related field of study plus one year of experience working in a library; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Management prefers candidate with a bachelor's degree and one year of experience working in a library.
