Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

The New Mexico State Library, established in 1929 and located in Santa Fe, provides direct rural library services through books by mail and bookmobiles, supplemental funding to public libraries, a research library, and has a Library for the Blind and Print Disabled. The Library Development Bureau provides consultant and programming support to over 100 public and Tribal public libraries statewide.

The Rural Services Program provides library services to under-served and rural communities across New Mexico. The program operates multiple bookmobiles that deliver books, educational materials, and library services to schools, senior centers, and community locations in areas without easy access to a public library. The department focuses on promoting literacy, supporting lifelong learning, and ensuring equitable access to library resources throughout the state. This position is based in Cimarron, NM.
Why does the job exist?

This position exists to ensure the continued delivery of library services to rural and under served communities through the operation and support of the bookmobile program. The position is essential for maintaining scheduled routes, providing circulation and resource sharing services, supporting community outreach, and assisting with daily operational needs. By supporting bookmobile operations, this position helps ensure equitable access to library materials, literacy services, and educational resources across the state.
How does it get done?

1. Provide quality library services on the Bookmobile to rural patrons using all appropriate and available resources.
2. Conduct all library services in accordance to policies and procedures as well as tracking quarterly statistics.
3. Assist in managing and building a library collection based on patron preferences and entering that collection in the Integrated Library System for check out by patrons and tracking of collection.
4. Promote marketing and outreach of other programs for rural residents such as Books by Mail and Library for the Blind and Print Disabled.
5. Help drive the bookmobile; schedule vehicular maintenance and repairs and maintains an ongoing log of work performed and dates.
6. Submit time sheet in Share system, submit per diem forms after traveling, and perform all duties related to providing library services.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions

The position entails operating and driving a 31+ foot bookmobile on rural roads and highways. Must have the ability to climb, stand, reach, stoop, lift, and carry books on and off the bookmobile, including moving materials in and out of the bookmobile office. There is regular use of computers and telephones in a shared office space with closely positioned workstations. Work may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, and dust.
