What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.
What you will do at Harris County Public Library:
Responsible for a wide array of tasks designed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable library experience for patrons. Duties include patron assistance, engaging in activities and program delivery, outreach, and maintenance of library materials. Delivers comprehensive customer service, actively connects patrons with the information they need, and efficiently handles circulation tasks. Support innovative library programs, demonstrating a thorough understanding of all library operations and consistently delivering an exceptional customer service experience.
This is a part-time temporary position with an ending date of December 31, 2026.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide customer service and manage customer accounts using the integrated library system software in the library and during outreach events
Assists patrons on computers, answering phones, and assisting with request for assistance
Checking in and delivery of holds, returned items, and new items
Pulling expired holds, shelving returned and new items, running reports, and looking for lost items on the shelves
Basic reference service in the library and during outreach events
Promote library services to the community
Accurately enter data, handle sensitive customer information, and handle cash transactions
Maintain and promote an engaging and attractive library collection
Attend staff meetings, activities, and professional conferences and actively serve on committees
Other duties as assigned

Education:-
High School diploma or GED equivalency
Experience:-
One (1) year of verifiable Customer Service experience
Additional Information:-

Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED) must be readily available upon request

Candidates must complete a clerical skills test and achieve a minimum typing speed of 30 WPM with at least 80% accuracy

This job typically operates in a professional office environment.
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
At times, work can be performed in an outdoor environment and possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.
There could be exposure to dangerous or aggressive/adverse populations.
Physical Demands:-
Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying.
Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts, carries, and exerts up to 40 pounds.
