Position:
Library/Media Assistant

Reports to: Building Principal

Employment Status: Beachwood Union of Support Staff (BUSS) Contract


Position Summary


  • Assists the Library/Media Specialist with day to day duties including, but not limited to:
    • Helping students navigate the library and learning resources (hard copy and electronically)
    • Checking in/out learning resources for students and staff
    • Communicating with technology department in regards to 1:1 program
    • Assisting with fees and notifications to parents
    • Running video/audio for school-wide presentations/events

Required Education, Experience & Qualifications


  • Ohio Department of Education Educational Aide Permit
  • Endorsement in the area of “ESEA Qualified”
  • Training in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)
  • Meet all health requirements mandated by law
  • Satisfactory completion of BCII and FBI background checks
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle license


Job Responsibilities & Duties


  • Keep the librarian/media specialist informed of media center programs, policies and activities within his/her area of responsibility through conferences and periodic evaluation of the media center programs, materials and equipment
  • Assist with the selection of all library/media materials, including technology, and for the maintenance of a viable and balanced library/media collection, both hard copy and electronic in accordance with the district materials and selection policy
  • Assist in implementing the library/media course of study
  • Assist teachers in integrating library/media into classroom instruction
  • Assist with planning professional development relating to information technology and resources for building staff members.
  • Strive to meet the needs of teachers and students by providing requested resources.
  • Promote reference and readers’ advisory services to the general student population, including students who have special reading problems, unusual intellectual interest or special educational needs
  • Assist with maintaining catalog of materials, accession lists, and other record keeping specific to the library/media center, both hard copy and electronic
  • Assist with training library aides and volunteer help in the areas for which they will be responsible
  • Assist with the development of a climate that encourages full use of the media center by students and staff
  • Assist with creating professional reports, compiling statistics as required by the Ohio Department of Education and administrators, and keeping teachers apprised of service and/or operations
  • Work as a member of committees and instructional groups as necessary
  • Assist with the library media budget and recording of all expenditures
  • Supervise students in a variety of settings
  • Performs related duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities


  • Ability to problem solve, organize effectively, and react productively to interruptions and changing conditions
  • Ability to create and work as part of a team
  • Knowledge in utilizing a variety of computer software and programs
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve simple technology issues for students and staff
  • Skill in interacting with staff, students and the public with sensitivity, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to maintain confidential information such as medical and student records
  • Ability to respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
  • Ability to complete mandated training requirements required for licensing by the Ohio Department of Education
  • Ability to effectively supervise a group of students in varying activities
  • Ability to effectively understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to maintain effectiveness in a stressful situation

  • The employee shall not disrupt District operations or undermine the positions of the Board of Education and administration
  • The employee shall demonstrate the ability to interact in a positive manner with staff, students and the public and promote a positive image of the district through exemplary personal conduct including but not limited to:
  • The ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing, with tact, diplomacy and excellent grammar
  • The demonstration of effective listening skills
  • Remaining free of any alcohol or controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Beachwood City School District


Physical Demands


  • Ability to hear and speak, read and write, sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, use hands to operate a computer and other equipment, kneel, bend at the waist, reach overhead – above the shoulders and horizontally, to retrieve and store files and supplies, ability to lift, carry, push and pull items up to a maximum of fifty (50) pounds
