Lieutenant (#011246) Kirkland Correctional Institution, Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises security staff assigned to the transportation department. prepares work schedules and issues duty assignments.
  • Supervises the leave and attendance of subordinates.

  • Make sanitation, safety and security inspections of vehicles to make sure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.

  • Trains subordinates, supervises and verifies the accuracy of scheduled formal counts; makes informal count when necessary.

  • Prepares and submits written documentation when required.

  • Conducts security checks/inspections for contraband control.

  • Studies and remains thoroughly familiar with current operational and administrative directives pertaining to minimum and medium/maximum security institutions for transporting reasons.

  • This position is for transportation.


Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.


SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
  • Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
