ROLE:

The Litigation Associate is a high-potential attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public law and civil litigation. In this role, you will take meaningful ownership of cases while working closely with partners and senior attorneys representing public agencies throughout California.

This is an opportunity for attorneys who want substantive responsibility, direct client interaction, and a long-term home where they can deepen their public law expertise. You will be trusted to manage core aspects of litigation, exercise sound judgment, and contribute strategically—while continuing to grow under the mentorship of experienced practitioners.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Public Law Litigation & Case Management

  • Support and lead litigation matters involving public agencies, from case assessment through resolution
  • Handle discovery, motion practice, mediations, and trial preparation with increasing independence
  • Draft pleadings, dispositive motions, briefs, and legal memoranda on complex public law issues

Research, Writing & Analysis

  • Conduct advanced legal research on statutory, regulatory, and constitutional issues
  • Prepare clear, persuasive written work product for courts, clients, and internal teams

Client & Trial Engagement

  • Participate in client meetings, witness preparation, depositions, mediations, and trial proceedings
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with public agency clients and opposing counsel

Collaboration & Professional Judgment

  • Work closely with partners and litigation teams in a collegial, fast-paced environment
  • Exercise discretion, reliability, and ownership in managing deadlines and case strategy

REQUIREMENTS:

Experience & Education

  • 1-3 years of litigation experience, with a strong emphasis on public law
  • Prior experience at a city attorney’s office, public law firm, or law firm handling public agency matters
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for candidates with fewer than 5 years of experience

Licensure & Skills

  • Active and good-standing membership with the California State Bar
  • Excellent legal writing, research, and analytical skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple matters efficiently

WORK ARRANGEMENT:

  • 90-95% remote or hybrid
  • Reasonable billable hours requirement

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • $140,000 – $190,000 base salary, based on experience
  • Annual performance-based bonus
  • Annual discretionary and billable-hours bonuses

  • Must be located in California or willing to relocate
