Litigation Legal Secretary

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Litigation Secretary to primarily support our Eminent Domain & Inverse Condemnation group. This group represents both public agencies on major infrastructure projects and private landowners protecting their property rights. The Litigation Secretary will play a key role in supporting attorneys with case management, litigation filings and administrative tasks. The ideal candidate must have extensive litigation experience, with strong working knowledge of federal and California state court rules and procedures and advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office—particularly MS Word. This position is hybrid (onsite 2+ days per week), may be based in our Los Angeles or San Francisco office and reports to the Legal Support Services Supervisor.

The hourly range for the position of Legal Secretary at Nossaman is approximately $46.15 to $58.97 an hour. The successful candidate’s annual compensation for this position is expected to be set between $90,000 and $115,000 per year. However, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, format and file pleadings, motions, discovery and other litigation documents in California state, federal and appellate courts
  • Manage case calendars, deadlines, hearings, depositions and trial preparation
  • Coordinate discovery, including document production, subpoenas and communications with experts and witnesses
  • Assist with trial preparation by organizing exhibits, witness materials and logistics
  • Open new matters, prepare engagement letters and run conflict checks in accordance with Firm procedures
  • Draft, proofread and finalize correspondence, reports and client-facing presentations
  • Maintain electronic and physical case files, ensuring compliance with Firm and court requirements


Experience & Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent, is required. A bachelor’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) years of litigation secretary experience directly supporting fast-paced litigation attorneys is required. Eminent Domain experience is a plus
  • Strong working knowledge of legal terminology, legal and court proceedings, including the process for state and federal court filing and recording systems
  • Extensive experience in formatting complex, multi-paged documents, such as pleadings, briefs, motions, tables of contents, tables of authorities and appellate briefs
  • Experience supporting multiple attorneys simultaneously
  • Strong ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments and communicate workflow management to attorneys and/or administrative manager
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and various legal software applications (i.e. iManage, Litera ChangePro, Chrome River, Intapp, etc.)
  • Experience with timekeeping and billing software; Aderant experience is preferred
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills, enabling credible and diplomatic interactions with all levels of the Firm and clients and effective collaboration
  • Exceptional organizational, grammar, spelling and proofreading skills to support fast-paced administrative responsibilities
