Litigation Paralegal

L*ITIGATION *PARALEGAL–*J*OBD*ESCRIPTION*

A busy personal injury and criminal firm in Decatur seeks a Litigation Paralegal with three plus years of experience in high-­‐end criminal defense law and/or plaintiff’s personal injury litigation to support their growing practice. You will be responsible for conducting electronic searches; indexing, docketing, organizing, drafting complaints, drafting disclosures, responding to discovery requests, scheduling, trial preparation, answering phones, client contact, case support to the attorneys, and other related tasks. In addition to paralegal work, the job includes some administrative duties such as answering phones, ordering supplies, assisting in marketing efforts, and filing paperwork.

A college degree and/or paralegal certificate is required. You must have strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently and prioritize workload effectively. Attention to detail, strong editing and proofreading skills is required for this position. ■ Firsthand experience and knowledge of legal processes

■ Undergraduate degree and/or paralegal certificate (minimum)

■ Three years work experience in criminal defense and/or PI law practice

■ Litigation experience, especially assisting at trial

■ Self-­‐motivating, intelligent, and disciplined

■ Keen organization, planning and implementation skills

■ Proficiency in Daylite, Case Management, Quickbooks, and MS Office

►*D*UTIESAND R*ESPONSIBILITIES*

■ Order office supplies

■ File client paperwork, both physically and electronically

■ Keep office records up to date

■ Maintain calendar and/or tickler system (docket when answers/discovery/motion responses are due and keep cases on track with deadlines)

■ Open & close client files

■ Prepare case checklist and track case status in Daylite

■ Answering office line & return all calls within 24 hours

■ Phone presence-­‐ representation of attorney to “outside”

■ Client screening

■ Draft electronic communication as necessary

■ Gather and organize case evidence

■ Maintain client case files

■ Inventory & process daily mail

■ Trial preparation, assemble trial notebooks

■ Weekly client & team meetings

■ Draft initial or responsive pleadings; draft discovery; draft subpoenas & arrange for service; draft temporary motions, affidavits, & orders; draft Conflict Letters and LOA’s

■ Keep work space clean and clutter free

■ Maintain organization and integrity of electronic data, index or summarize documents and transcripts

■ Assist in preparation of clients for court hearings

■ Notify witnesses of status of trial date & have them "on call"

■ Arrange for service of documents

■ Responsible for client intake process

■ Communications with Court and Court Clerks

■ Maintain contact w/client & handle calls when legal advice is not needed/ assist in keeping client informed of status of case

■ Arrange for investigative interviews

■ Schedule expert witness interviews & appearance at trial

■ Investigate opposing side’s unknown witnesses

■ Obtain information for discovery, organize, categorize, & determine completeness of discovery

■ Check on service of process, & draft any necessary motions for service

■ Schedule depositions/have subpoenas served/arrange for court reporter

■ Prepare deposition summaries

■ Use public information sources to get information/arrange for private investigators

■ Prepare for trial including reviewing file for problems & drafting amended pleadings

■ Pre-trial organization of trial exhibits & prepare exhibit list

■ Assist attorney at trial -­‐ manage file at trial. Keep track of exhibits introduced & admitted at trial

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $80,402.00 per year
