Litigation Paralegal

Hudson Cook is seeking an experienced Litigation Paralegal to manage complex and document-intensive litigation and government investigations involving consumer financial services law. This position requires a well-organized, detail-oriented and independent paralegal to work with the growing Litigation and Government Investigations practice group, assigned to specific matters, clients, projects, and/or attorneys. Hudson Cook’s litigation practice focuses on defending against consumer litigation in federal and state courts and arbitration forums throughout the United States.

Location: Washington, DC, Ooltewah, TN or Hanover, MD

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage case files including discovery documents, pleadings, and correspondence files.
  • Maintain the firm’s official file utilizing the document management system.
  • Assist in the preparation of court documents including court-required formatting, cite-checking, Bluebooking, and creating table of authorities and table of contents in legal briefs.
  • Assist in the filing of court documents through CM/ECF and state court e-filing platforms.
  • Create production logs and privilege logs.
  • Summarize and organize deposition transcripts.
  • Review court orders, federal rules, state court rules, local rules, and judges’ procedures to calendar case deadlines.
  • Interpret and operationalize local, court, and judge rules with respect to deadlines, case docketing, and court filings.
  • Take appropriate action to monitor and meet deadlines.
  • Conduct PACER research and run PACER reports.
  • Work with litigation databases, including conducting searches, loading transcripts, and coding documents.
  • Assist in deposition preparation, including preparation of deposition notebooks.
  • Number and stamp documents for document productions, trial exhibits, and trial notebooks.
  • Copy and code documents in large document productions performed inside or outside the office.
  • Assist with trial organization.
  • Retrieve public records and/or obtain public records from online sources or directly from government institutions.
  • Research, analyze, and summarize law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treatises, constitutions, legal codes, and law-related information relevant to practice area.
  • Summarize simple depositions or other legal documents.
  • Review, revise, and assist attorneys in preparation of legal documents appropriate to practice area, including preparing templates compliant with local rules.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of tracking tools and reports to keep clients informed of case progress.
  • Perform paralegal duties and responsibilities as directed by attorneys in assigned practice group.
  • Perform all assignments in strict compliance with ethical guidelines governing the practice of law.
  • Receive and follow complex instructions.
  • Establish priorities and work concurrently on a variety of projects. Communicate if unable to meet daily responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate good teamwork skills within and among practice groups, offices, and firm to facilitate efficient delivery of legal services.
  • Timely track and record client-billable time and non-billable hours.

  • Excellent grammar, document formatting, punctuation, and proofreading skills.

Qualifications

  • Paralegal Certificate.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience as a litigation paralegal.
  • Experience supporting cases in federal courts; experience supporting consumer cases in state courts, and AAA or JAMS arbitration, helpful.
  • Experience with e-discovery solutions, such as Relativity, and records management systems.
  • Working knowledge of the courts and court filing systems, including CM/ECF and various state e-filing platforms.
  • Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite products.
  • Ability to perform electronic legal research using Westlaw and Lexis.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
