The Dane County Land and Water Resources Department has an opening for an LTE Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist position in Madison, WI.

Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

DEFINITION

Under direction from the Dane County Land and Water Resources Department (LWRD), this classification is responsible for providing county-wide assistance in preventing the introduction and spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS).

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Watercraft inspections - visually inspect boats and other water recreational equipment for attached plants or animals. Demonstrate how to clean watercraft and what AIS preventative steps boaters must take every time they leave or enter waterways and accurately enter data collected into statewide database. Assist with updating Dane County AIS Prevention and Control Plan. Work with County, state and general public on identifying regional wetland and riparian invasives including a demonstration project for biocontrol. Coordinate with other organizations for the purpose of educational events, monitoring activities and sharing of data (examples include Project Red and Snapshot days). Assist with aquatic plant management activities including identification and mapping. Work with and assist LWRD and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on new finding verification, early detection and rapid response grant development.

Education, Experience and Special Requirements

Education, Training and Experience:

Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to one (1) year in biological sciences is preferred.

Special Requirements:

Requires a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Must possess a Wisconsin DNR Boater Safety Certificate prior to the first day of employment. Must be able to work a variety of early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays. Such work hours will be scheduled to coincide with peak boat landing traffic whenever possible.

Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Wisconsin’s Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

Must be physically able to inspect watercrafts and trailers for invasive species. Ability to lift 50 pounds, bend and kneel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of computer applications including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite. Must be friendly, outgoing and able to approach strangers and initiate conversations while knowing when to back away from and avoid conflicts. Must be self-motivated, reliable, and able to perform duties with limited supervision. Ability to operate watercrafts and back a trailer desired.
