Job Summary/Basic Function
Master of Arts in English Graduate Instructors are hired to teach one or two lower-division courses per semester as needed. Graduate Instructors must be Master of Arts students in good standing. As Graduate Instructors, they may be assigned to teach any of the following courses:
- ENGL 1010
- ENGL 2010
Required Qualifications
Must be MA in English student in good standing.
Must be a matriculated Master of Arts in English student in good academic standing.
Successful candidates must attend mandatory informational and training sessions, including online Canvas trainings, prior to the beginning of their teaching appointment, and must take MENG 6822/23 Teaching College Writing & Practicum in their first semester.
GIs are expected to maintain good academic standing (a GPA of 3.25 or above, B+ average) and complete successful reviews of teaching from composition and graduate program observers. To continue in the position beyond a semester, TAs must do the above and receive satisfactory evaluations of their current course from students.

Teaching experience (e.g. K-12 teaching, undergraduate learning assistantships, etc.) or teaching-related experience (e.g. tutoring in English and/or writing).

As part of the interview, you will be expected to give a 10 – minute teaching demonstration. Please address your teaching demonstration as if the hiring committee are students. You may include some explanation for contextualizing your lesson. Be prepared to answer questions regarding the process you utilized and the pedagogical choices you made in designing the lesson. The topic of this mini-lesson must be related to composition, rhetoric, and writing studies. You can select from this list of topics, but are encouraged to craft a lesson on an original topic:
