Job Summary
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of machining operations, from initial customer RFQs and quoting through production, quality control, and final shipment. This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical involvement, particularly in CNC machining.
The ideal candidate will manage the full lifecycle of jobs—from purchase order to packing slip—while ensuring efficiency, profitability, quality, and on-time delivery. This position requires strong operational planning, technical expertise, and leadership in a fast-paced precision manufacturing environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperations & Production Management
- Oversee day-to-day shop operations, ensuring efficient workflow from customer PO through final shipment
- Plan, schedule, and prioritize production to meet customer deadlines and optimize machine utilization
- Manage job routing, staging, and execution using ERP systems (e.g., JobBOSS2) and scheduling tools.
- Monitor and improve key performance metrics including OEE, lead times, scrap rates, and on-time delivery.
- Ensure all jobs are executed efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.
Quoting & Cost Management
- Review RFQs and develop accurate cost estimates including labor, material, tooling, and machine time
- Prepare and submit customer quotations based on data analysis and production requirements
- Ensure all jobs are costed correctly and executed to meet profitability targets
- Monitor margins and implement corrective actions to maintain financial performance
- Manage tooling costs, usage, and life-cycle to reduce expenses and improve efficiency
Technical Oversight
- Provide hands-on and technical support as needed.
- Assist with troubleshooting of machining processes and quality issues to minimize downtime.
- Oversee first article inspections and in-process quality checks.
Planning, Procurement & Inventory
- Plan and coordinate all resources required for upcoming jobs prior to production
- Manage raw material procurement, tooling inventory, and shop supplies
- Coordinate with vendors for outsourced processes (plating, heat treating, NDT, etc.)
- Establish min/max inventory levels.
- Ensure all required tooling and materials are available to support production schedules
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all quality standards, including ISO 9001, ITAR and customer-specific requirements
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for non-conformances
- Partner with quality to maintain product integrity and continuous improvement.
- Oversee final inspection, documentation, and shipping requirements.
- Maintain accurate job records and support post-job reviews
Shipping & Logistics
- Oversee the daily operations of the shipping department, ensuring efficient execution of final inspection, packing, labeling, and shipment preparation
- Enforce processes to ensure accuracy and completeness of packing slips, certifications, and customer-specific documentation
- Supervise shipping personnel, providing direction and accountability for performance and output
- Oversee logistics and carrier selection to support on-time delivery and cost-effective transportation
- Monitor shipping performance metrics and implement improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and delivery reliability.
Team Leadership & Workforce Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop machinists, operators.
- Assign work, manage staffing levels, and optimize team performance
- Conduct performance reviews, provide feedback, and implement development plans
- Execute disciplinary actions and support termination decisions
- Assist with interviewing and hiring
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement
Continuous Improvement & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce waste
- Provide technical input and process development
Pay: $95,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
