Position Description:
The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for driving equipment reliability, managing technical change processes, and supporting maintenance planning within a paperboard print manufacturing facility. This role plays a key part in identifying and resolving systemic issues, coordinating engineering changes, and contributing to continuous improvement efforts across the plant.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Management
    • Lead and facilitate RCA investigations into equipment failures and chronic issues.
    • Document findings and corrective actions and ensure follow-through on implementation.
    • Maintain a database of RCA reports and track trends to support reliability initiatives.
  • Engineering Change Request (ECR) Coordination
    • Manage the ECR process for equipment modifications, upgrades, and process improvements.
    • Evaluate proposed changes for feasibility, impact, and compliance.
    • Coordinate cross-functional reviews and approvals and oversee implementation.
  • Preventive & Predictive Maintenance Support
    • Collaborate with the Maintenance Scheduler to optimize PM schedules based on equipment history and performance data.
    • Support predictive maintenance efforts using vibration analysis, thermal imaging, ultrasonic testing, and other condition monitoring tools.
  • Technical Documentation & Compliance
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date engineering documentation, including equipment specs, change records, and maintenance procedures.
    • Ensure all engineering activities comply with safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Project & Reliability Support
    • Provide technical support for capital projects, equipment installations, and layout changes.
    • Assist in evaluating new technologies and equipment to improve plant reliability and efficiency.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Work closely with production, maintenance, and procurement teams to resolve equipment issues and implement improvements.
    • Participate in continuous improvement teams and contribute engineering expertise to problem-solving efforts.
  • OEM Vendor Visit Coordination
    • Collaborate with the Maintenance Coordinator during the OEM vendor visits to document the purpose of the visit, key findings, outcomes, and required follow-ups.
    • Use these visits as an opportunity to review and evaluate the effectiveness of existing preventive maintenance (PM) and predictive maintenance (PdM) programs.
    • Assess whether current PdM strategies—such as vibration analysis, thermal imaging, and ultrasonic testing—are effectively identifying potential failures and contributing to equipment reliability.
    • Recommend adjustments or enhancements to PM/PdM activities based on vendor insights and observed equipment conditions.
Education / Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in maintenance or reliability engineering in a manufacturing environment, preferably printing or packaging. Hands-on experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of RCA and ECR processes.
  • Hands-on experience with predictive maintenance techniques such as vibration analysis, thermal imaging, and ultrasonic testing.
  • Proficiency with CMMS and engineering documentation systems.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and project coordination skills.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
  • RCA Completion Rate – % of RCA investigations completed within defined timeframes.
  • ECR Implementation Efficiency – Average time from ECR submission to full implementation.
  • Equipment Downtime Reduction – % reduction in unplanned downtime year-over-year.
  • PM Compliance Rate – % of preventive maintenance tasks completed on schedule.
  • Cost Savings from Vendor/Part Optimization – Annual savings from engineering-led procurement improvements.
