Purpose of Job
The purpose of this classification is to perform general maintenance services for the Parks & Recreation Department. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to a drug screen.
Essential Functions
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the following essential functions:
- Performs general carpentry and masonry work to include renovation of park structures and construction of new structures to include shelters, restrooms, docks, play structures, signs, sidewalks, block/brick work, etc.
- Performs minor electrical and plumbing repairs to park restrooms and structures.
- Provides general maintenance and repair to all Park buildings and equipment to include sanding and refinishing, fabricating signs, moving furniture, etc.
- Performs upkeep on Park grounds to include mowing, tractor operation, weed eating, trimming trees/hedges, etc.
- Scrapes, sands, paints interiors and exteriors of Park buildings.
- Assists in the supervision of maintenance employees in the absence of the Supervisor and/or as directed.
- Opens building; deactivates security system, turns on lights and unlocks doors.
- Accepts deliveries; helps delivery person unload; deliveries shipments to proper locations.
- Performs custodial duties ad needed to include sweeping/mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, dusting/vacuuming, etc.
- Sweeps outside steps, cleans around building; clears snow and ice from sidewalk and steps as necessary.
- Assists with special tasks and projects.
- Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours
- Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office
- Perform other duties as required
- Responsible for changing light bulbs, ballast, and fixtures as needed in all county buildings.
- Assess problems, find solutions or contact who is responsible to fix the problem.
- Responsible for general maintenance issues including doors, roofs, drop ceilings, sheetrock repair, and painting.
- Must be able to work with sprinkler systems and other fire protection systems.
- Must be able to identify heating and cooling components to report problems.
Will work on a rotation “on-call” schedule.
Minimum Training & Qualifications
- High School Diploma, or GED, Vocational/technical diploma preferred; with four (4) years of experience in maintenance, repair, electrical, plumbing systems, or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee driver's license.

Physical Requirements
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of maintenance/repair tools and equipment, such as a lawnmower, weed-eater, drill motor, sander, janitorial equipment, table/hand saws, small hand tools for plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, etc.
Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials, or lift-up to 100lbs. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
Occupational Hazards
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors, cold and hot weather conditions including precipitation
- Exposure to various types of sprays, pesticides, and other chemicals
- Works around and with various types of equipment including welding and cutting torches
- Exposure to electrical currents
