Maintenance Technician, Part Time, Sheriff's Department

Job Summary

This position performs technical duties in the repair and maintenance of department buildings, including the county jail.

Major Duties

  • Processes and completes work orders.
  • Inspects the county jail for maintenance and repair needs.
  • Installs soap and towel dispensers.
  • Repairs and installs steel tables and stools.
  • Repairs mirrors in jail cells.
  • Repairs bunk beds.
  • Replaces mainline valves.
  • Replaces and repairs doors, hinges and doorknobs.
  • Repairs and paints ceilings.
  • Repairs and installs kitchen fixtures.
  • Makes welding repairs.
  • Installs shelves and furniture.
  • Waxes and buffs floors.
  • Makes plumbing repairs.
  • Orders and purchases supplies as necessary to complete projects.
  • Changes light bulbs and ballasts.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of relevant construction codes.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in building repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in diagnostic troubleshooting.
  • Skill in the operation of job-related tools, vehicle sand equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have at least one ( 1 ) year of related experience.

Complexity/Scope of Work

  • The work consists of related technical duties. Electrical hazards contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the maintenance and repair of department buildings, including the county jail. Success in this position ensures safe and well maintained buildings and facilities.

Physical Demands/Work Environment
Occasionally
  • Driving a County vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.
  • Working in low temperatures.
  • Working in high temperatures.
  • Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
  • Working in noisy environments.
  • Working small and/or enclosed spaces.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
  • Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Medium work that includes carrying objects up to 50 pounds.

Constantly
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles.
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.

Other Requirements/Information
  • Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license.
  • Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this job. Pre-employment drug/alcohol testing, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and criminal background checks are required.
  • This position is covered by Civil Service; therefore, is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies.
