Maintenance Worker 1 - Gardens

The Maintenance Worker in the Gardens department provides entry-level gardening and grounds maintenance tasks associated with the care of cemetery grounds. With supervision, regularly work individually, with an associate, or as a member of a team. In addition, regularly assist other departments as needed to complete other associated tasks as directed. Operate a variety of light trucks and utility vehicles, motorized gardening equipment, and hand tools. Provide caring and compassionate service to visitors and guests at all times.


What You'll Be Doing

  • Litter and debris removal.
  • Assist visitors, guests, and/or property owners with directions or provide other assistance as needed. This assistance includes completing interment space maintenance requested.
  • Immediately reporting any safety hazards encountered.
  • Report repairs needed to facilities found during the course of the day to the department supervisor.
  • Review the Maintenance Interment report regularly to determine if there are any scheduled funeral services coming up in area of assignment.
  • Review the Service Sheet each morning for funeral services scheduled in area of assignment.
  • Demonstrate respect for visitors, guests, team members and all other employees at all times.
  • Demonstrate complete integrity at all times.
  • Mowing, edging and trimming of lawns.
  • Trimming of lawn around memorial tablets and lawn vases.
  • Trimming of hedges, espaliers, shrubs and ground covers.
  • Prepare for, and plant landscape plants and trees and install sod.
  • Prune small trees.
  • Apply chemicals, including fertilizers, wetting agents, and herbicides.
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up before and after special events.
  • Set up and secure canopies for funeral services and special events.

  • Some specialized training and practical/hands-on experience in gardens or grounds maintenance is preferred, but not required.
  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to learn the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for the safe removal, preparation and planting of landscape plants and trees.
  • Ability to learn the materials, equipment use, and techniques used for the safe application of chemicals including fertilizers, wetting agents and herbicides.
  • Ability to learn the materials, equipment use, and safety precautions for a variety of other grounds maintenance and gardening tasks.
  • Demonstrate tact and diplomacy when dealing with team members, internal customers and visitors.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those in contact throughout the course of the duties.

Drug Testing Policy

Prior to beginning employment, all job applicants who receive a job offer will be required to voluntarily submit to a drug screening test conducted by a laboratory designated by Forest Lawn. The drug screening method is a hair collection test that will detect the use of illegal drugs within the past 90 days. A positive drug test may result in the withdrawal of the job offer.
