Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Maintenance Worker to perform a variety of tasks in the Stormwater Maintenance division, duties to include:

Duties:

  • Occasionally operate light automotive equipment and specialized maintenance equipment, such as concrete saw, pole saw, etc.

  • Perform a variety of manual work to perform required maintenance on drainage ditches and systems.

  • Assist with loading/unloading materials.

  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance to ensure proper methods/techniques are utilized, including storm water drainage structures, culverts, manholes, pipe mains, concrete, metal, and plastic pipe.

  • Carries tools, equipment, and supplies to/from the job site by truck and/or by hand.

  • Service/perform minor repairs on equipment.

  • Serves as a flagger to direct traffic around construction on the roadways.

  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.

  • Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

** This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, snow, etc.).

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Completion of 7th grade plus one (1) year of experience in fields, such as municipal public works maintenance or construction, utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities; or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a valid drivers license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Attachments Required:

Preferences:

  • Drainage or utility maintenance experience.
  • Experience installing/repairing culverts, catch basins, and other drainage structures.
  • Experience with concrete saw, pole saw, and landscaping-type equipment.
  • Flagging certification
  • VA or NC Driver’s License
  • Commercial Driver's License
  • Experience with hand tools.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
