JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State is searching for a full time Maintenance Worker, Fire Suppression Systems - Grade 5 - Grade 5 to join the team. Duties include:

  • Operate control panels for testing of sprinkler systems, jockey pumps, fire alarms and transfer and isolation switches. Ensure that tests are being conducted in accordance with federal regulations
  • Conduct inspections and perform preventative maintenance on all fire suppression systems in accordance with governmental regulations
  • Conduct inspections, maintenance and testing of post-indicator valves and wall-indicator valves in accordance with federal regulations
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot failures on sprinkler systems
  • Perform sprinkler shutdowns and start ups as required for maintenance and renovations
  • Perform sprinkler systems inspections and testing of wet, dry and deluge sprinkler systems in accordance with governmental regulations
  • Repair, replace and adjust various types of alarm tripping systems such as low-air-detection and flow switches
  • Repair and replace retard chambers, accelerators, water motor bells and various valves
  • Advise other trades people, when required, on various systems as problems occur
  • Inspect, service and repair fire extinguishers, hoses, extinguisher heads, horns, tanks, portable and built-in fire extinguishing systems, etc.
  • Order and inventory parts, supplies, tools and equipment for fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems and other fire extinguishing systems
  • Maintain fire extinguisher inspection records and preventive maintenance records
  • Report test failures in accordance with governmental regulations
  • Review test and inspection failures with supervisor
  • Assist in creating follow-up work orders to have systems restored to governmental code
  • Install new extinguishers and remove extinguishers from old buildings
  • Fill and replace extinguishers such as co2, dry chemical, wet chemical, pressurized water, soda acid, foam, etc.
  • Maintain service shop and work area in a clean and orderly condition
  • Instruct and direct lower-graded employees assisting in inspection, testing and repairing of fire suppression systems when required
  • Perform duties of lower-graded employees when required
  • Detect unusual conditions and report to supervisor
  • Operate service vehicle in performance of duties

Job Requirements: Requires the use of shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, various types of adjustable measuring instruments and the training generally applicable in a particular or specialized occupation. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years applied trades training. Over 1 year up to and including 3 years of effective experience.

Work Schedule: 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Days Off: Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
