Job Title : Maintenance Worker/Grounds Maintenance

Salary Index : Support Scale N6 (8 hours daily, 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.)

Reports To : Executive Director of Operations and Maintenance, Maintenance Supervisor, and Maintenance Foreman

FLSA Status : Non-Exempt

SUMMARY/NATURE OF POSITION

This position will perform repairs to small engine grounds equipment (lawn mowers, snow blowers, weed eaters, etc). Will operate grounds equipment which includes backhoes, dump trucks, fork lifts, bobcats and lawn mowers. Will also push snow when needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, TASKS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform preventive and repair maintenance on all lawn mowers, weed eaters, snow blowers and grounds equipment.
  • Will be required to have a CDL license. Will be given a period of time to obtain if needed.

  • Mow and weed eat property at the maintenance office.

  • Use a truck with plow and remove snow on school properties.

  • Use backhoe to dig holes and expose underground utilities for repairs.

  • Use fork lift, dump truck, farm tractor, and bobcat.

  • Perform tree trimming and vegetation removal when needed.

  • Perform small repairs to parking lots and haul gravel when needed.

  • Will be responsible for transporting science kits, tables, chairs, and delivering furniture to schools when requested.

  • Maintain and monitor supply inventories.

  • Keep records of requests/dates for equipment, tables and chairs.

  • Possess basic computer skills to access or work order system, emails and order supplies online.

  • This is a physical job that requires lifting, pulling weeds, using power equipment or mowing all day; must have the physical stamina to perform the essential functions and responsibilities of the position.

  • Works with other school personnel in a cooperative manner.

  • Informs and communicates with school personnel (administrators/head custodians) concerning status of work order requests.

  • Assists in training of new employees (i.e. head custodians)

  • Maintains good rapport with school patrons and the general public.

  • Practices and upholds standards of confidentiality of work related matters.

  • Attends required meetings, programs, and activities.

  • Demonstrates ability to work and communicate with subcontractors in planning, scheduling, and completing work assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential and general duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED): one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and work order requests. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to use a computer is beneficial.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to read a ruler or tape measure within fractions of an inch.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to apply problem solving skills in analyzing and resolving encountered problems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Virginia Driver’s License is required.
