Position
SEPA is seeking a strategic and creative Manager, Executive Communications and Thought Leadership to lead external communications for our CEO and executive team. This individual will play a central role in shaping how our leadership shows up on national and global stages—through speeches, op-eds, interviews, social media, and other public platforms.
In close partnership with the Senior Director, External Communications and the Chief Communications Officer, this role will also develop and execute a comprehensive thought leadership strategy that expands the reach and influence of our organization and its leadership across key sectors, audiences, and moments.
This is a high-impact role for a skilled communicator who excels at executive voice development, has a sharp understanding of the media and policy landscape, and knows how to craft narratives that inspire action and spark new conversations.
Responsibilities

Serve as the primary writer and content strategist for the CEO’s external communications, including keynote speeches, op-eds, bylined articles, panel talking points, podcasts, and executive correspondence.

In collaboration with the Manager, Media Relations, develop timely executive commentary in response to major policy, regulatory, or industry developments to position SEPA leadership as a trusted voice.

Develop and manage an annual executive visibility plan in coordination with the broader communications team and organizational priorities.

Manage the development, drafting, and optimization of executive social media content (particularly LinkedIn) to expand executive influence and visibility.

Identify and secure strategic thought leadership opportunities (e.g., conferences, awards, advisory boards) to elevate the CEO and senior leadership as go-to voices in the energy space.

Collaborate with research, membership, marketing, events, and media teams to ensure alignment and thought leadership integration across organizational efforts.

Provide message development and support for other executive team members as needed.
Team Leadership and Collaboration

Partner closely with the Senior Director, External Communications, the Chief Communications Officer, and other communications team members to ensure unified and compelling organizational storytelling.

Work collaboratively across departments to source stories, data, and insights that can inform and enhance executive communications.

Build and manage relationships with external writers, editors, and agencies as needed to support writing and editorial excellence.

Help foster a culture of strategic storytelling within the organization, elevating the importance of thought leadership as a tool for impact.
Innovation and Optimization

Monitor and analyze emerging trends in clean energy, leadership branding, and executive influence to ensure our thought leadership efforts remain cutting-edge.

Experiment with new platforms, formats, and channels (e.g., LinkedIn newsletters, audio content, long-form essays) to maximize message reach and resonance.

Regularly assess, track and report on the performance of executive communications to inform strategy and demonstrate impact.

Identify opportunities to amplify CEO and executive content through digital channels and earned media.

3-5 years of experience in strategic communications, speechwriting, public affairs, or related fields.

Exceptional writing and editing skills, with demonstrated experience writing for C-suite or high-profile leaders.

Ability to translate complex issues into compelling narratives for diverse audiences.

Deep understanding of media, public policy, and/or the clean energy, environmental, or nonprofit landscape.

Strong track record of building and executing thought leadership strategies with measurable results.

Excellent interpersonal and project management skills, with the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with or within nonprofit advocacy or clean energy organizations.

Experience working at an agency on energy and/or climate accounts.
