Manager of Outpatient Pharmacy

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Outpatient Pharmacy Manager serves as the Pharmacist-in-Charge and is responsible for the overall leadership, regulatory compliance, clinical excellence, and financial performance of the outpatient pharmacy. This role ensures the safe and efficient preparation and delivery of medications to patients, including bedside/department/clinic, infusion (if applicable) and home delivery services (if applicable), and provides direct patient counseling to support optimal therapeutic outcomes. The Outpatient Pharmacy Manager oversees daily pharmacy operations, supervises pharmacists and technicians, and ensures adherence to all applicable federal and state regulations, including DEA and Texas State Board of Pharmacy standards. Additionally, the Outpatient Pharmacy Manager collaborates with healthcare providers to enhance medication safety and supports strategic initiatives to improve service quality, operational efficiency, and fiscal accountability.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Manages and supervises Pharmacy operations including responsibility for formulating and implementing policy and practice at the department level, and overseeing day-to-day operations and workflow of the pharmacy department
  • Assists in the planning, development, organization, operation, and evaluation of pharmacy services; assesses and changes pharmacy operations in coordination with the pharmacy management team
  • Assures pharmacy staff development, new employee orientation, and ongoing training in the pharmacy in coordination with other pharmacy managers
  • Helps assure that policies and procedures are updated and followed in coordination with the pharmacy management team
  • Assures compliance with pharmacy laws and provides staff guidance when appropriate in regards to regulatory agencies including The Joint Commission standards, National Patient Safety Goals, USP Standards, URAC, ACHC and participates in quality assurance activities to evaluate and maintain safe medication practices
  • Assists with budget preparation and ongoing cost containment initiatives for medication use and operations; provides other management reports as required
  • Assures compliance with departmental productivity targets and assists with staffing proposals
  • Coordinates operational activities related to informatics, order entry systems to support safe and efficient dispensing of medications to patients
  • Coordinates operational activities related to drug use, control, inventory, billing and shipping/delivery processes.
  • Assures proper control of pharmaceutical controlled substances and maintenance of proper records and Inventories as required by state and federal law
What qualifications you will need:

  • B.S. or PharmD. Degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy Required
  • 3 years of experience in outpatient retail, specialty or hospital pharmacy Required
  • 3 years of management or supervisory experience Preferred
  • Completion of a 1-year pharmacy practice residency, specialty residency, or fellowship, and/or an advanced degree (MBA, MHA, MS) Preferred
  • Familiarity with URAC/ACHC Accreditation and 340B Program Preferred
Licenses, Certifications, & Training:

  • Applicable State Pharmacy License Required
