Manager, Solid Waste Operations - Facilities Management

Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:

The Manager of Solid Waste Operations is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Solid Waste Unit. The position supervises five (5) Solid Waste Drivers and a Supervisor that operate two roll off truck routes, two front end truck routes, and perform other duties related to the collection and removal of on-campus waste. Responsibilities include route scheduling, employee training, Work Order management, purchase order management, as well as truck and equipment maintenance. Other duties include: managing the use of solid waste containers, maintaining landfill permits and providing data for accounting and reports. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Administrative Services for the Building and Landscape Maintenance department within Facilities Management.

Physical Demands:

Incumbent will be required to occasionally perform hands on tasks such as drive vehicles. Incumbent must be able to operate heavy equipment, use hand tools and be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis and 100 pounds occasionally with assistance; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment: to work in hazardous or irritation environments, confined spaces and adverse weather and temperature conditions: to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Incumbent is an Essential employee, subject to a 24 hour, seven day week span of operation including being available to manage waste management responsibilities during emergency periods including snow emergencies and special campus events. This position is telework eligible.

Preferences:

Five (5) years’ experience in the management of front-end and/or roll-off trash trucks and drivers. Recycling and/or waste management experience is strongly preferred, including technical expertise in waste management operations, vehicle maintenance, and collection methods.

Licenses/ Certifications:

Must have and maintain a valid Maryland Class C license (or equivalent) with fewer than six points. Must be willing to obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers’ License within 12 months of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Three (3) years of waste management, facilities, operations, construction, or maintenance experience. One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional staff. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of solid waste management. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments.
