Marketing Specialist Position

Introductory Overview

The Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau is seeking a creative, organized, and forward-thinking Marketing Specialist to lead and execute marketing initiatives that inspire travel to Bayfield and strengthen our community brand. This role is ideal for a passionate storyteller who thrives in a dynamic, small-team environment and wants to make a direct impact on one of Wisconsin’s most beloved destinations. The Marketing Specialist will manage a variety of projects spanning digital marketing, print publications, photography, video production, and event promotion—helping visitors discover Bayfield’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, and welcoming community.

Working closely with the Executive Director, Public Relations Manager, and Chamber members, this position plays a key role in developing and maintaining cohesive marketing campaigns that drive tourism, support local businesses, and elevate Bayfield’s reputation as the Gateway to the Apostle Islands.

Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 3+ years of experience in a marketing, communications, or creative role, preferably within tourism, destination marketing, or nonprofit sectors.
  • Experience developing and executing multi-channel marketing campaigns with measurable results.

Technical and Creative Skills

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro or similar).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneDrive, etc.)
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress and customer
  • relationship management (CRM) tools.
  • Strong understanding of digital advertising and AI platforms (Grok, ChatGPT, Google Ads, Meta, programmatic) and analytics tools (Google Analytics, Meta Insights, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of email marketing platforms (Constant Contact, Mailchimp, or similar).
  • Excellent writing, editing, and visual storytelling skills with an eye for brand consistency and design.

Professional Skills

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills—comfortable engaging with business owners, board members, and public audiences.
  • Experience developing and managing marketing plans and budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze marketing data and translate insights into actionable recommendations.
  • collaborative mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation.
  • Knowledge of Bayfield and the surrounding area, including local attractions, events, and community culture, is highly preferred.
  • Willingness to assist with events, community engagement, and visitor center operations as needed.

Formal Role Details

Oversee and execute all marketing initiatives for the Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau,

maintaining a cohesive brand presence across digital, print, and in-person channels while driving tourism and supporting membership growth.

Strategic Planning and Oversight

  • Lead development and execution of the Chamber’s annual marketing plan and marketing budget.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Public Relations Manager on campaign strategies, creative direction, and organizational marketing goals.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and media partners to ensure timely ad placements, creative alignment, and cost efficiency.
  • Partner with regional tourism entities and local businesses to expand cooperative marketing opportunities.

Advertising, Digital Marketing and Analytics

  • Design and develop ads that effectively showcase Bayfield’s unique attractions and experiences.
  • Oversee digital advertising campaigns (Google, Meta, programmatic, etc.) in coordination with vendors like Platypus.
  • Track performance metrics and generate monthly reports for the Board of Directors (BOD) and membership, highlighting ROI and engagement.
  • Present annual performance summaries to stakeholders and local government entities.
  • Implement marketing automation and data-driven communications to maintain visitor engagement throughout the year.

Website and Content Strategy

  • Manage and maintain Bayfield.org to ensure accurate, engaging, and user-friendly content that inspires travel planning and visitation.
  • Oversee content development—writing, photography, and video—to ensure consistent brand storytelling and high-quality visual assets.
  • Keep digital content current, optimized for SEO, and aligned with seasonal campaigns and event promotions.

Membership Relations and Collaboration

  • Maintain active relationships with Chamber members to identify marketing opportunities and create collaborative content.
  • Develop educational workshops or marketing insights sessions for members to share best practices and strengthen the overall community brand.
  • Provide support for membership communications, including newsletters, co-op materials, and marketing collateral.

Creative Production and Publication

Oversee design cobtent and production of printed materials, including:

  • Bayfield Travel Guide
  • Art Escape Brochure
  • Fruit Loop & Art Loop Guides
  • Membership Co-op Booklet
  • Apple Festival Guide
  • Downtown Map

Ensure all materials are cohesive, visually engaging, and representative of the Bayfield brand.

Collaborate with part-time creative staff (e.g., photography, videography, social media) to

maximize creative output.

Event and Community Marketing

Assist in planning and execution of major Chamber events such as:

  • Chicago Travel & Adventure Show
  • Wisconsin State Fair
  • Apple Pie & Dessert Contest
  • Apple Festival

Take a leadership role in event marketing, signage, and visual storytelling to strengthen

community visibility.

Support local events with on-site coordination, volunteer engagement, and visitor assistance.

Innovation, Grants and Revenue Growth

  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities (e.g., Travel Wisconsin JEM) to increase marketing reach and funding.
  • Explore new revenue streams—such as branded merchandise, special events, or new literature pieces—to strengthen the Chamber’s sustainability and visibility.
  • Continuously research emerging marketing trends to keep Bayfield’s marketing efforts forward- thinking and effective.

Operations and Team Collaboration

  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the Visitor Center as needed, including visitor assistance and volunteer coordination.
  • Provide basic IT or technical support for staff as applicable.
  • Supervise and collaborate with part-time staff responsible for social media, photography, videography, and other related creative work.
