Job Description:

The Epidemiology Internship offers hands-on experience in infectious disease data analysis, public health surveillance, and dashboard development. Interns will work alongside epidemiologists and program leaders to support efforts that monitor, prevent, and control healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance across Nebraska.


Key Project

HAI-AR Dashboard Development, Data Analysis, and Reporting

The intern will contribute to building and maintaining Power BI dashboards, analyzing antibiotic use and resistance data, and preparing reports that guide antibiotic stewardship and surveillance. This project continues the work of a previous CSTE Fellow and provides meaningful insight into public health data systems and applied epidemiology.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist with dashboard development and updates in Microsoft Power BI for infectious disease and antibiotic use datasets.

  • Refresh and improve existing dashboards (e.g., Group A Streptococcus, C. difficile, Legionella).

  • Support creation of new dashboards related to long-term care antibiotic use and Medicare Part D data.

  • Conduct data analysis to assess antibiotic utilization and resistance trends.

  • Prepare and update annual antibiotic use reports and Standard Utilization Rate (SUR) reports.

  • Collaborate with the HAI-AR team to streamline reporting workflows and enhance data visualization.

  • Participate in team meetings and assist with special projects as assigned.

  • Build professional connections within Nebraska’s Division of Public Health.


Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications : Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution) OR recently graduated (within one year) a graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current graduate student, preferably in Public Health, Epidemiology, Data Science, Biostatistics, or a related field.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience or interest in Power BI, Excel, or other data visualization tools.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an office setting.

Internship Details

  • Internship is in-person at the Nebraska State Office Building in Lincoln.

  • Students are expected to work at least 15 hours per week
