Job Overview : A Maternity Nurse is an essential part of many families' birth planning and postnatal care for a new baby. Their role is to provide expert training and guidance in the immediate postpartum period to ensure that both mother and baby receive the best possible care. With detailed knowledge of newborn care, including newborn bathing, feeding, monitoring, and safety, a Maternity Nurse is able to provide the mother with much needed emotional and physical support, as well as giving guidance to any family members. Through experience and personal dedication, a Maternity Nurse provides safe and family-centered care.

Maternity Nurse Responsibilities & Duties

  • Provide immediate postpartum care to mothers and newborns
  • Monitor the health of the newborn and the mother
  • Provide guidance on newborn care, including feeding, bathing, and sleeping routines
  • Administer medications and perform medical procedures as needed
  • Offer emotional support to new mothers and families
  • Educate parents on postpartum recovery and self-care
  • Assist with developing healthy routines for the newborn
  • Coordinate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for the mother and baby
  • Prepare and manage nursery supplies and equipment
  • Respond to emergencies and provide first aid if necessary

Maternity Nurse Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience in postpartum or neonatal care
  • Advanced training in maternal and newborn health
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to provide compassionate and patient-centered care
  • Bilingual abilities for communicating with diverse populations
  • Certified in CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Valid nursing license
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Nursing/ OR 5 Years Experience
  • Completion of a maternity nursing training program
  • Strong knowledge of postnatal care practices
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends
  • Excellent observational and problem-solving skills
  • Physical stamina for long shifts
  • Ability to work in high-stress environments
  • Strong organizational skills
