MCSO Sr Adm Support Asst –Library Assistant

Hourly Range: $20.33 - $25.41

This is an hourly, non-exempt position. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity. Internal equity considerations include an assessment of the applicant's salary history and qualifications in comparison to the market rate and requirements for the job.


Position Summary

The Library Assistant supports the operation of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Detention Center Library by providing structured access to educational, legal, and leisure reading materials for residents. This position plays a critical role in promoting literacy, supporting rehabilitation, and ensuring equitable access to information within a secure correctional environment. The Library Assistant works in collaboration with Programs staff, detention officers, and external partners to maintain an organized, compliant, and impactful library service that aligns with MCSO’s mission of safety, accountability, and rehabilitation. Assisting with literacy-based programming, book clubs, or educational initiatives when applicable.


Key Responsibilities

Resident Support & Engagement

  • Assist residents with accessing library materials, educational resources, and legal materials
  • Provide guidance on selecting materials that support literacy, personal growth, and reentry readiness
  • Promote reading as a tool for rehabilitation, stress reduction, and positive behavior

Library Operations & Circulation

  • Manage the distribution and collection of library materials within assigned housing units or program areas
  • Maintain accurate records of materials issued and returned using the Offender Management System (OMS)
  • Monitor overdue materials and coordinate follow-up as needed
  • Organize and shelve materials using established classification systems
  • Conduct routine inventory checks to ensure accountability of all materials

Legal & Educational Resource Support

  • Facilitate access to legal materials in accordance with residents’ rights and facility procedures
  • Assist with tutoring coordination or educational resource access when applicable

Safety, Security & Compliance

  • Operate within all MCSO detention policies and procedures
  • Ensure all materials entering and exiting housing units meet security standards
  • Work in coordination with detention staff to support safe and efficient movement of materials

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree or coursework in literature, library science (especially), education, criminal justice, or related field preferred
