DEFINITION:

The purpose of this job/class within the organization is to conduct skilled inspections, maintenance, and repair of City vehicles and equipment.

This job/class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Not all-inclusive):

Conducts inspections on City vehicles and equipment; documents discrepancies; makes general repairs on vehicles including tune-ups, headlights, wipers, fuel systems, and suspensions.

Repairs City equipment including Fire Department equipment.

Conducts service calls and repairs vehicles and equipment in the field.

Maintains stock room inventory of spare parts; picks up and/or delivers parts as needed.

Maintains logs and records of work accomplished such as Preventive Maintenance Sheets and Daily Work Record Sheets.

Consults technical reference documentation such as manufacturer's manuals and parts manuals for technical information necessary for repairs.

Monitors and ensures all ASE/EVT certifications are up to date.

Transports vehicles and drops off for painting, body work, and warranty repairs.

Maintains a clean and safe work environment; sweeps, removes trash, mops, and recycles scrap metal, oil, filters, and batteries.

Additional Duties:

Performs related work, as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in automotive mechanics, vehicle maintenance or closely related field. Requires two years' experience working with vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Requires a Class A commercial driver's license, with air brakes and tanker endorsement and valid DOT medical card required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), certified in brakes and steering/suspension is required preferred. If you do not have preferred ASE's, you will be required to obtain them within 6 months of hire.

Position is subject to being "on call" and working after normal City work hours as well as on weekends and holidays.
