Job Summary
The Mechanic Specialist is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and safe operations of all garden vehicles, equipment, and mechanical systems to support horticultural and facilities operations. This position provides hands-on mechanical expertise, manages routine and preventative maintenance schedules, and serves as the primary point of contact for equipment-related needs. The Mechanic Specialist ensures that all work is completed efficiently and in alignment with safety and environmental standards. The Mechanic Specialist will report directly to the Grounds Superintendent.
Duties & Requirements

Diagnose, repair, and maintain a variety of equipment, including small gas engines (weed eaters, blowers, mowers), utility vehicles, and garden machinery.

Perform repairs and maintenance on electric vehicles such as golf carts.

Conduct preventative maintenance and maintain detailed service logs, including the use of online databases.

Fabricate and weld metal components (arc and wire welding) to support departmental projects.

Maintain shop cleanliness, organization, and safety standards.

Assist with snow and ice removal to ensure safe access throughout the garden property.

Support the garden with special projects, event set-up, and construction needs as assigned.

Collaborate with horticulture, facilities, and operations staff to provide timely, efficient support.
Education & Experience

Secondary education in mechanical vehicle repair, with diesel repair experience a plus.

Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a repair facility or similar environment.

Broad knowledge of small gas engine repair and vehicle maintenance.

Experience with electric vehicle repair and diagnostics.

Basic welding and metal fabrication skills.

Proficiency with computers and ability to maintain accurate electronic records.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Flexibility and willingness to assist with diverse garden operations outside core mechanical duties.
Work Environment

Full-time, 40 hours per week; occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.

Work performed both in a shop setting and outdoors across the garden grounds.
