Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of physicians running smoothly. They are primarily responsible for administrative portion of the designated health care facility under supervision of the practicing physicians/office manager.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Opens and prepares the patient’s chart for efficient patient throughput
  • Prepares patients for examination by the physician by carrying out procedures such as taking history and vitals, physical screening, Eye exams (where applicable), ECG (where applicable), drawing blood for labs, and administering immunizations and injections
  • Records a height and weight
  • Ensures that the patient’s blood pressure falls within HEDIS guidelines, or develops a plan of care with the care team for follow up if the patient remains hypertensive
  • Prepares examination rooms for patient visits with the appropriate equipment
  • Guides the patients to examination room while maintaining professional behavior
  • Reviews the patient’s medication profile
  • Updates the patient’s immunization record
  • Verifies the patient’s allergies
  • Documents the patient’s chief compliant
  • Prepares patient prior to provider examination
  • Sets patient on exam table
  • Patient changes into gown as appropriate
  • Carries out all clinic-based patient care and documentation within the Florida Scope of Practice
  • Assists physicians during patient examinations
  • Prepares patient documents including diagnostic orders, prescriptions, refill requests, referral requests and ensuring online update of patient records with any such documents
  • Prepares the patient record for physicians’ review
  • Ensures FMLA, disabled parking, and all other forms requested by the patient are completed and ready for physician signature
  • Updates patient records with relevant documents both in physical and online form
  • Fills out insurance forms and insurance claims as required
  • Arranges for hospital admissions when required
  • Handles prescription refill requests, coordinating prescriptions with the pharmacy
  • Coordinates and arranges laboratory procedures
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens, monitors handing over of specimens to laboratory
  • Sterilizes instruments and disposal of contaminated supplies.
  • Helps the front office and nursing staff in managing and streamlining the flow of patients
  • Assists with managing telephone/online encounters with the patients
  • Complies with personnel policies
  • Acts based on constructive performance evaluations- staff development
  • Maintains HIPAA, confidentiality when interacting with patients, families, personnel and the public
  • BLS certification
  • Reviews patient chart review for completeness.
  • Familiarity with ICD-10 coding. Utilizes ICD-10 code book and records codes according to diagnosis
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of operations manual
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings
  • Maintains positive public relations image with peers, patients and visitors by presenting a positive, helpful attitude
  • Understands how to obtain/enter patient information into the computer
  • Disassembles patient medical record after patient visit and inputs and posts patients’ charges into computer
  • Answers telephone calls, identifying self and clinic/practice with proper patient triage
  • Receives and documents telephone messages and gives to the appropriate person
  • Schedules appointments with accurate patient information
  • Types various documents accurately and as directed, i.e., 1st reports, TAR’s and correspondence
  • Utilizes photocopy and facsimile machine
  • Assists in maintenance of a neat, orderly and accurate medical record system
  • Ensures that patient medical record is disassembled after patient discharge and filed away promptly
  • Maintains a neat, clean and functional workstation
  • Uses principles of body mechanics in mobilizing objects
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of Incident Reports
  • Has working knowledge and location of policy and Procedure manuals:
  • Understands how to pull and return required screenings and daily MRA sheets.
  • Ensures that staff is properly stocking and maintaining exam room conditions
  • Maintains clinical inventory and communicates equipment needs with the office manager
  • Maintains that clinical equipment is in working order and clinical logs are updated
  • Maintains professional environment
  • Strives to improve time management, phone answering and patient direct care while in clinic daily

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience

  • Certification from a relevant accredited program
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in a primary care setting
  • Should possess good clinical skills and physiological knowledge
  • Ability to perform comprehensive medical histories and physical exams
  • Ability to communication complex medical information to a diverse population
  • Be sympathetic and genuinely concerned for patients to promote and maintain health
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Good organizing, coordination and office skills
  • Customer service orientation and good phone etiquettes
  • Knowledgeable about record keeping, billing, coding and reimbursement processes

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

WORK ENVIRONMENT

All work is performed within a standard health care/primary care clinical setting.

Pay: $16.50 - $19.50 per hour
