Medical Assistant - Prescription Specialist

Florida Heart Associates is seeking a skilled and compassionate full-time Certified Medical Assistant - Prescription Specialist for our Fort Myers/Cape Coral offices. Qualified applicants should have at least one year of MA experience in a clinical setting. The Certified Medical Assistant - Prescription Specialist assists in the delivery of patient care within the office setting, facilitating communication between physicians and patients regarding medical concerns, questions, and follow-up care.

Located in the attractive Southwest Florida Gulf Coast area, Florida Heart Associates operates a modern medical center dedicated to meeting the cardiac needs of Southwest Florida. We perform diagnostic cardiac testing, in addition to peripheral vascular procedures. We also support an in-house cardiac PET imaging system, stress testing, ECHO, and management of arrhythmia equipment.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assisting.

EXPERIENCE: One year of recent MA experience in a clinical setting preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

  • Current/unexpired MA certification preferred
  • BLS certification required

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Review and respond to electronic prescription refill requests submitted by pharmacies, ensuring accuracy and timely processing.
  • Process and respond to patient refill requests submitted through the patient portal in accordance with clinical protocols and provider direction.
  • Address patient concerns, questions, complaints, and medication-related requests, ensuring clear communication and appropriate follow-up.
  • Coordinate and obtain medication authorizations with insurance providers to ensure timely patient access to prescribed medications.
  • Assist patients in completing medication assistance program applications and supporting documentation as required by pharmaceutical programs.
  • Prepare prescription refill requests for review and authorization by the physician, APRN, or PA-C, ensuring completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Prepare, organize, and distribute medication samples to patients as directed by providers and in compliance with office protocols.
  • Maintain professional communication and working relationships with pharmaceutical vendors and representatives.
  • Oversee the medication sample room, including maintaining inventory levels, organization, compliance with storage requirements, and documentation as required.
  • Provide training and guidance to newly hired medical assistants on prescription workflows, including prescription routing procedures and prescription download processes.
  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment, including obtaining patient histories and vital signs.
  • Review patient charts for accuracy and completeness prior to office visits and obtain necessary medical records as indicated.
  • Prepare examination and treatment rooms with the appropriate instruments and supplies.
  • Prepare patients for Holter monitoring.
  • Prepare patients for blood pressure checks, EKGs, and rhythm strips. Review results with the physician, APRN, or PA-C and document appropriately in the patient chart, including patient complaints, concerns, symptoms, actions taken, and patient response.
  • Coordinate patient testing and hospital admissions as necessary, including transcribing orders for hospital procedures when indicated.
  • Maintain exam rooms, medication sample room, physician dictation stations, and nursing stations to ensure adequate inventory and organization.
  • Monitor medication samples and properly discard expired or outdated medications in accordance with office policies.
  • Perform daily checks of the crash cart and AED and notify the manager of any expired medications or supplies requiring replacement.
  • Provide patient education regarding newly prescribed medications or treatments and maintain an adequate supply of patient education materials.
  • Transcribe patient instructions and enter orders for laboratory work, procedures, and medications during patient visits as directed by the physician, APRN, or PA-C.
  • Assist physicians, APRNs/PAs, and other departments as needed to ensure efficient patient flow and timely completion of clinical tasks.
  • Provide coverage for other departments and clinic locations as directed by the supervisor and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain punctuality, dependability, and regular on-site attendance.
  • Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising manager.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and clinical practice necessary to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures related to the delivery of patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and appropriate precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures, as well as the use of medical equipment required for patient care.
  • Skill in assisting with a variety of treatments and medication administration as directed by the physician, APRN, or PA-C.
  • Skill in obtaining vital signs, maintaining accurate records, and documenting test results.
  • Skill in identifying problems, conducting research, and recommending appropriate solutions.
  • Skill in preparing, maintaining, and managing patient records, as well as responding to related correspondence.
  • Ability to utilize computer systems and technology to enhance job performance and support clinical workflows.
  • Skill in operating standard office equipment, including computers, photocopiers, and fax machines.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient and organizational information.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, external offices, pharmaceutical representatives, and medical staff..
  • Skill in maintaining departmental quality control standards and procedures.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond efficiently in emergency or high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply established guidelines, policies, and procedures.
