Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a meaningful role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.Receives training and participates as a member of the health care and mental health treatment team in interviewing patients/clients, family members and friends to acquire information about home environment, family relationships, and personality traits that may have a bearing on the patient's/client's illness, treatment and recovery.
Assists the patient and family members with environmental difficulties.
Keeps informed of community, mental health, and welfare resources and the variety of programs offered by each.
Participates in medical ward rounds, out patient care clinics, and mental health care team conferences, and shares social information and evaluations with other health care disciplines to develop the most effective treatment plan for the patient.
Participates in placing patients with medical and/or psychiatric needs, including mental or emotional disorders, in board and care homes, skill nursing facilities, intermediate care homes, residential facilities, VA hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities based upon recommendations from Psychiatric and Medical Staff, and personal interviews with patient and/or their families.Assists in the initial interview of new patients/clients at mental health clinics, learns to identify nature of problem and to make referrals to psychiatric team or outside clinics or community agencies.

Medical case worker experience is defined as providing services which include interviewing, counseling, and assisting patients with social problems which may have a bearing on the patient’s illness, treatment, and recovery.
Patient care environments include hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation facilities, residential facilities, or health care facilities.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education, experience, and desirable qualifications, and a supplemental questionnaire based upon your application information, weighted 100%
Applicants must receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be placed on the eligible register.
ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:
Applicants who passed the assessment are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the Department of Health Services as they occur.
Note: We may use an alternative banding method in line with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D).
AVAILABLE SHIFTS:Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
