Advocate Health is seeking a Surgical Informatics Officer - Associate Vice President to provide clinical informatics leadership across perioperative and procedural services. This physician leader will partner with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing, operations, and IT to optimize Epic‑enabled surgical workflows, enhance quality and safety, and drive enterprise‑wide standardization across the surgical continuum.

This role is designed as a 0.6 FTE physician leadership position, enabling continued clinical practice while providing meaningful informatics leadership impact across the enterprise.

Pay Range

$151.65 - $242.65

Major Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates, analyzes and ensures documentation of assigned function workflows across various specialties. Identifies opportunities for reengineering to support aims and ensure that optimized, reengineered workflows are technologically enabled. Leads efficient design, builds and optimizes documentation, ordering and decision support tools within the electronic medical record system.
  • Ensures physician training and support is aligned to promote the goal of efficient use of technology in the delivery of high quality patient care. Dedicates time to each facility to learn complexities as well as develop collaborative relationships with all physicians throughout the Advocate Aurora Health system.
  • Leads assigned function Electronic Medical Record (EMR) governance across Advocate Aurora Health. Serves as the medical informatics leader for the assigned function group.
  • Provides clinical and IT leadership in the areas of planning, development, preparation and implementation of strategic and tactical clinical information systems. Develops empathy and understanding of physician needs and builds relationships with physicians to gain support of IT initiatives. Collaborates closely with other clinicians.
  • Leads design of clinical pathway models with clinical leadership, and assists in modification of these models to gain maximum efficacy and support for patient care and research protocols. Works in collaboration with various stakeholders.
  • Reviews medical informatics trends, experiences and approaches, develops technical and application implementation strategies and assists in the development of strategic plans for clinical information systems. Uses data to proactively monitor, revise and automate best practices to improve quality and patient safety.
  • Evaluates the impact of information technology on clinical processes and identifies areas to promote use of technology in creating efficiencies for clinicians and improving quality of care. Leads and facilitates clinician advisory groups in the design of clinical systems to support excellence in patient care and research.
  • Highly responsive to user needs, including training, to assure wide spread acceptance and provider use of the clinical systems. Collaborates with physician champions across Advocate Aurora Health to synthesize feedback from frontline physicians and providers and translate them into actionable initiatives.
  • Serves as a key conduit of communication with physicians relating to informatics and information systems. Serves as an advisor to other project managers with non-clinical experience

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • MD or DO degree with board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) relevant clinical specialty
  • ACLS/BLS certified; trauma response training preferred.

Education Required:

  • Doctorate Degree in Medicine.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 10 years of experience in direct health IT deployment and optimization.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • High level of clinical knowledge, analytical ability, critical decision making skills and an extensive knowledge of healthcare issues, with a focus on the science of integrating healthcare, technology, and clinical data.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of clinical work flow in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Ability to develop flexible, transferable models for pathways of care.
  • Strong leadership, organization, and collaborative management skills.
  • Knowledge of major trends in healthcare and managed care., Familiar with point of care products and medical informatics trends and tools.
  • Knowledgeable in the areas of management and systems improvement concepts.
  • Skilled in implementing organizational strategies to improve healthcare delivery.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Generally exposed to a normal office environment.
  • Position requires travel, therefore may be exposed to weather and road conditions.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
