Medication Technician

Summary: Administer medication as ordered by the physician to all residents on the medication program. The Med Tech position is inclusive of the Home Health Aid/Personal Care Aid position with additional leadership role as defined below.

Qualifications

  • Maintains a current state license as a HHA or PCA

  • Minimum of one-year experience in home health, assisted living or long-term care

  • Possess the ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English

  • Medication Administration Certification preferred

  • May require lifting or bending. Must be able to lift 25-35 pounds

Reports to: The Wellness Nurse and or LPN in the absence of the Wellness nurse.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Will conduct daily cross over meetings at the beginning and end of each shift.

  • Will do the medication narcotic count at beginning and end of shift

  • Provide medication assistance with the approval of the resident and his/her

  • representative.

  • Complete a Medication Assistance Training Program.

  • Follows the Medication Administration Policy and Procedure and administers the medication to each resident.

  • Record receipt of medications brought into the facility and medications sent out with residents and their families.

  • Ensure that all residents receive their medications as ordered and that they have a

  • sufficient supply of medication on hand so that residents never run out and follow

  • through with families to ensure same

  • Report any refusals and/or reactions of medications to the Director of Patient Services

  • Ensures that the medications are current and available in the med cart

  • Assists with ordering.

  • Documents the administration of the medication when given,

  • Answer calls from residents promptly and courteously.

  • Be available during your shift to accept incoming calls and problems unless specific tasks require you to be in another part of the building.

  • Report and record all unusual reactions or changes in a resident ‘s condition to other staff through the Daily Log.

  • Assist with providing a safe environment and report immediately any unsafe condition to the Director of Patient Services.

  • Participate in general overall upkeep of total area to assure a safe environment for staff as well as residents.

  • Clean and store equipment in the proper area, especially a daily cleaning of med cart by night staff.

  • Complete assigned tasks before leaving premises.

  • Report to incoming shift/med person before leaving your shift.Perform Narcotics Count with someone from the oncoming shift. Sign off before

  • leaving shift.

  • Adhere to the Resident’s Bill of Rights.

  • Perform any and all such duties related to the effective and efficient operation as may be assigned.

  • Documents the attendance of all the residents to each meal and monitors the nutritional needs of each resident.

  • Acts as team leader in the absence of the Wellness Nurse or LPN in the building

  • Is aware of the whereabouts of each resident at all times

  • Is aware of the activities on the activity calendar for the day

  • Is back up to the call button system and ensures that all call bells are being responded to in a timely manner.

  • Will function as a HHA/PCA and/or direct staff members attend to residents needs when the other HHA’s/PCA’s cannot respond in a timely manner to a call button.

The HHA/PCA:

  • Reports to the LPN/MT any changes in resident behavior.

  • Requests assistance from the LPN/MT if inability to perform ADL’s.
