Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Position Summary

In collaboration with the supervising physician, the Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), at Ocean County DOc, Toms River, NJ provides comprehensive psychiatric and medical services to incarcerated individuals within the Department of Corrections. Services are delivered in accordance with community standards of care, correctional healthcare regulations, and applicable state and federal laws. This role emphasizes patient-centered, evidence-based mental health treatment in a secure and multidisciplinary environment. Per Diem.

Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced clinical assessment skills, including psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, and development of treatment plans
  • Strong knowledge of psychopharmacology with the ability to safely prescribe, monitor, and manage psychiatric medications within the scope of licensure
  • Ability to deliver high-quality, patient-centered mental health care consistent with community standards and correctional healthcare guidelines
  • Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills in both routine and high-acuity situations
  • Proficiency in ordering, interpreting, and responding to diagnostic tests and clinical data
  • Strong documentation skills, including accurate, timely, and compliant electronic health record (EHR) entries
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with physicians, nursing staff, mental health professionals, and custody personnel
  • Ability to educate patients regarding diagnoses, treatment options, medications, and ongoing care plans
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, secure environment
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and adherence to ethical, legal, and regulatory standards, including HIPAA and PREA
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based clinical practice

Performance Expectations / Essential Duties

  • Conduct and document comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including patient history and mental status examinations
  • Order, interpret, and act upon diagnostic and laboratory tests as clinically indicated
  • Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications and therapeutic treatments in accordance with licensure, protocols, and collaborative practice agreements
  • Perform invasive or therapeutic procedures within scope of practice as necessary
  • Prepare and dictate discharge summaries, transfer orders, and continuity-of-care documentation
  • Develop, implement, and follow established patient care protocols and clinical guidelines
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to educate patients on their mental health conditions and treatment plans
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge through consultation, formal education, and review of current literature
  • Participate in quality improvement, peer review, and clinical performance initiatives
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Functional Demands

  • Ability to pass all required health screenings and background checks
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and participate in on-call coverage
  • Must be available to work on short notice when operationally necessary

  • Maintains security clearance for the assigned facility

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a psychiatric/mental health focus
  • Current, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the applicable state
  • National certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
  • Prior experience providing direct patient care as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Current prescriptive authority, including DEA registration as required
  • Experience in correctional healthcare, behavioral health, or comparable clinical settings preferred
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred if required by the facility
  • Ability to meet all credentialing, background check, and security clearance requirements
