MEP Design Manager

Our Company:

OTDS is an electrical engineering company, originally specialising in the oil and gas industries. Established in 1978, we have evolved our business to manufacture and serve our clients within the renewable, oil and gas industries around the world. OTDS is a manufacturer of E HOUSES used in the UK renewable sector, suppling DNO, IDNO and EPCs. We are looking for an experienced Design Manager to lead a small but growing team of technical designers and engineers. The successful candidate will cement their position with OTDS in this exciting period with further opportunities in our ever-expanding business.

The Role:

Design

  • Act as the lead designer across the business, personally producing M&E technical drawings, schematics, and layouts for our E HOUSES.
  • Produce substation layouts, SLD preparation, wiring schematics, cable sizing calculations, earthing layouts, protection scheme development & cable containment etc.
  • Undertake 2D and 3D CAD modelling to support project design and client presentations.
  • Select and design of ancillary equipment. Working with subcontractors for the installation of HVAC, fire alarm and firefighting systems, lighting and auxiliary services.
  • Evaluating technical specifications in the tender documentation packages and reviewing risks and implications of the requirements

Project & Client Management

  • Providing design and technical expertise and guidance in identifying, analysing and resolving project challenges
  • Liaising with clients and stakeholder to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences and comfortable in a client-facing environment.
  • Share any service issues and propose and implement improvement strategies, sharing these through regular progress meetings and weekly reports
  • Carry out site surveys and feasibility assessments for new and existing projects.
  • Review site installations to ensure conformance to design specifications and relevant standards.

Team Leadership:

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a small team of mechanical and electrical design engineers, allocating workload and providing day-to-day technical guidance.
  • Set and maintain design standards, procedures, and quality benchmarks across the team.
  • Evaluate and implement advances in design technologies and software to enhance the team's capabilities and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with project management, sales, and installation teams to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and delivered on time.
  • Support the growth of the design function as the business scales, including involvement in recruitment and onboarding of new engineers.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum HND qualified engineer (mechanical or electrical); degree-level qualification preferred.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on M&E design experience within the building services or renewable energy industry
  • Knowledge of medium voltage switchgear, relays, ct/vts is a benefit
  • Strong proficiency in 2D and/or 3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, or equivalent).
  • People management experience is required, must be comfortable operating as a designer while also managing a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality, accurate design work.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills
  • You’re an effective communicator, with strong influencing and negotiating skills, able to build and maintain key client relationships.
