What You'll Do

As the Emergency Management meteorologist, coordinate/support/work with the Engineering Meteorologist for all meteorological associated tasks and assignments, assesses system health and performance, and provides overall technical responsibility for meteorological system operability and maintenance activities. This position provides meteorological technical guidance to various organizations within the Pantex plant. This roles includes helping create forecasts during emergency situations and inclement weather conditions as well management and development of multiple meteorological sensor networks, and continued research into the precursors of mesoscale convective storm formation in the Texas panhandle, this position optimizes Pantex’s response to lightning threats, ensuring that protective measures are effectively implemented when necessary, while at the same time minimizing unnecessary production interruptions due to overly conservative lightning threat assessments. This role will also be providing the capability of plume modeling for hazardous material in planning for and mitigating an emergency.
Travel throughout the Texas Panhandle will occur, but no overnight stays are required and personal transportation is not needed as company transportation will be used.
In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of a Department of Energy (DOE) Qualified Meteorologist, which includes the following:
Should possess a working knowledge in related sciences, such as physical hydrology, physical geography, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, electricity and magnetism, light and optics, chemistry and computer science. Should have a working background in electrical equipment and electronic hardware and can perform the field work to install, maintain and calibrate meteorological instruments and/or perform data quality assurance and instrument quality control. Must have specialized experience, including an understanding of the measurement of atmospheric phenomena using in situ and remote scientific equipment and instrumentation. Should be able to decode, plot and record data related to the physical characteristics of the atmosphere. This involves developing charts, diagrams, cross sections and other analytical presentations.
  • Must quality assure and archive on-site meteorological monitoring program data
  • Respond to sitewide customer data requests.
  • Conduct meteorological analyses, which include some consultation, and assisting customers in determining their actual data needs.
  • Provide weather forecasts for operations and Emergency Management including, but not limited to, snow and ice events, severe weather events, including flooding, large hail and tornadoes.
  • Research background to assist customers with a wide variety of meteorological analyses.
  • Provide modeling capability for emergency planning and event purposes.
  • Develop, implement and maintain procedures and systems related to the on-site meteorology program.
  • Develop reports that document meteorological data quality and completeness.
  • Assist all customers with on-demand meteorological data needs and applied data analysis.
  • Analyze local and regional weather data to provide user-specific forecasts.
  • Assist the site meteorologist with meteorological data interpretation to support leadership decisions, such as extreme weather events and accident-related scenarios.
  • Provide decision makers with summary analyses for large amounts of data to determine outliers, trends and scientifically based predictions.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree: Minimum 4 years of relevant experience. Typical experience ranging from 7 to 10 years.
  • Master's degree: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
  • PhD.
  • OR applicants without a bachelor's degree may be considered based on a combination of at least 12 years of completed education and/or relevant experience

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10 CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
