Microservices Engineer

Microservices Engineer – Fully Remote (Temp‑to‑Hire)
Salary: $135,000–$160,000

The VA Lighthouse Program is a major U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs initiative modernizing how Veterans, partners, and internal teams access critical VA data through secure, scalable APIs. The program AI & Engineering team supports this mission by strengthening platform reliability, modernizing technology, and enabling high‑performing engineering teams across the enterprise. This role is fully remote and temp‑to‑hire, with conversion eligibility based on client requirements.

Oversight Across a Large Microservices Ecosystem

This senior engineering role provides technical leadership and architectural guidance across dozens of microservices powering mission‑critical VA systems.

Oversee technical direction for 32 microservices across 6 agile teams (~40 engineers).
Lead architecture and code reviews for Spring Boot and Ruby microservices.
Review and guide AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) YAML configurations.
Improve health monitoring, DORA metrics, and operational observability.
Identify and recommend solutions to improve scalability, reliability, and availability.
Advise executives on strategic technology decisions and team capacity planning.
Oversee major deployments, high‑risk secret key rotations, and on‑call operations.

Mandatory Skills and Experience

15+ years of software engineering experience, with strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and Ruby.
Deep experience with DevOps practices including CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and version control.
Experience operating in 24/7, 99.999% SLA environments.
Background working with public‑facing APIs and complex backend data integrations.
Proficiency with monitoring tools such as Datadog and Kibana.
Strong executive‑level communication skills.
Mastery in API programming and the Java Spring Framework.
Advanced experience with AWS DevOps and GitHub.

Preferred Skills

Intermediate experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience with Octopus Deploy.
Familiarity with large‑scale deployments, microservices patterns, and cloud‑native architectures.
