Position Summary

The Utilities Technician (Utility Worker) responsible for supporting daily transit operations through facility upkeep, vehicle cleanliness, and general site maintenance. This role plays a critical part in ensuring VoTran/VoRide facilities and vehicles are safe, clean, functional, and presentable for employees, passengers, and the public.

Utility team members support operations, maintenance, and customer experience by maintaining a clean, organized, and professional transit environment.

The Utilities Technician reports to the Operations Manager or Operations Supervisor (as assigned).

Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities

  • Perform interior and exterior cleaning of transit vehicles, including buses, vans, and microtransit vehicles.
  • Clean driver areas, fare boxes, handrails, seats, floors, windows, and mobility equipment.
  • Replenish vehicle supplies as required.
  • Ensure vehicles meet cleanliness and safety standards before returning to service.
  • Identify and report vehicle defects, damage, or unsafe conditions to Maintenance.

Facility Upkeep & Maintenance Support

  • Maintain cleanliness of transit facilities, including dispatch centers, operator areas, restrooms, break rooms, offices, bays, and common areas.
  • Perform routine groundskeeping duties such as trash removal, light landscaping, and exterior cleaning.
  • Assist with minor facility maintenance tasks (changing light bulbs, cleaning drains, basic repairs).
  • Ensure walkways, entrances, and work areas remain safe and accessible.
  • Support facility readiness for inspections, audits, or special events.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all RATP Dev USA safety policies, PPE requirements, and hazardous materials procedures.
  • Use approved cleaning chemicals and equipment properly.
  • Report safety hazards, spills, or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Support infection control and sanitation protocols.

Operational Support

  • Assist Operations teams as needed with setup, staging, or movement of equipment.
  • Support special service needs, weather preparations, or emergency response activities.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify supervisors of low stock.

Professional Standards

  • Maintain a professional appearance and conduct.
  • Communicate respectfully with Operators, Supervisors, and other staff.
  • Always Represent VoTran and RATP Dev USA positively.

Knowledge

  • Basic cleaning methods and use of cleaning equipment.
  • Familiarity with safety procedures and material handling (preferred).
  • Understanding of workplace cleanliness and sanitation standards.

Skills

  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
  • Attention to detail and quality of work.
  • Basic communication skills.
  • Ability to safely operate cleaning equipment and tools.

Abilities

  • Ability to perform physical labor include standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying.
  • Ability to lift to fifty pounds as required.
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays assigned.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in janitorial, facilities, custodial, or vehicle cleaning work preferred, but not required.
  • Transit or transportation environment experience a plus.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, weather conditions, and vehicle environments.
  • Ability to work around moving vehicles and equipment safely.
