Verdantas is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mid-level Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing Geotechnical team in the Mid-Atlantic. This role may be based out of any of the following offices: Wilmington, DE, Dover, DE, Bel Air, MD, Lehigh Valley, PA, Philadelphia, PA, Wilkes-Barre, PA or Somerville, NJ. Remote work will be considered for qualified candidates residing in any of the above-listed states.
This is a unique opportunity to use your technical expertise to conduct geotechnical evaluations that support land development and redevelopment, civil infrastructure, stormwater management, transportation projects, landfill design, dam safety, and litigation support. This position will support Verdantas’ continued growth in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland, but will have the capability to support projects nationally.
The ideal candidate brings enthusiasm to utilize and expand their technical experience, thrives in a team setting, communicates openly, welcomes feedback, and stays current with emerging technologies and software. As a key contributor, you will also help shape the careers of emerging talent as well as develop into a project manager within the geotechnical team. You will bring strong technical expertise in soil mechanics, shallow and deep foundation design, ground improvement, slope stability, retaining structures, and geotechnical instrumentation, along with experience coordinating fieldwork, laboratory programs, and junior staff. Responsibilities include planning and executing geotechnical investigations, performing engineering analyses, and preparing geotechnical documents. Familiarity with geohazards such as liquefaction, seismic shaking, karst, and abandoned mine land is a plus for the candidate for this position.

What You'll Do:
Provide technical support to senior staff for geotechnical and multidisciplinary projects.
Assist with proposal preparation, field and laboratory investigation planning, scope development, and coordination of field/site work and staffing under the supervision of senior staff
Conduct geotechnical evaluations, engineering analyses, calculations, and computer modeling for foundations, retaining walls, pavement, and earth structures
Follow internal quality assurance and quality control procedures to ensure high-quality deliverables
Perform field exploration activities, including borehole logging, soil sample classification, and groundwater condition documentation
Develop data tables, figures, logs, specifications, design plans, construction documents, and other project deliverables
Prepare and contribute to technical reports summarizing research, findings, recommendations, and conclusions
Ensure the team follows internal and client safety guidelines
Capable of executing small to medium simple projects and contributing to a team with senior oversight on larger or more complex projects
Provide guidance and supervision for junior staff, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented work environment
Work closely with senior engineers and project managers to gain technical and management experience
Perform general field tasks such as site reconnaissance, field observations, measurements, photographic documentation, and pre-marking for explorations
Periodically support our field services and civil engineering teams during construction by assisting with consultation, submittals, RFI’s, and monitoring/evaluation of foundation installation, geotechnical-related site work, and other activities
What You Bring:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required; graduate degree (Master's or Doctorate) with an emphasis on geotechnical engineering preferred
4 - 8 years of relevant experience
NCEES Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required; PE licensure preferred with the ability to apply for reciprocity in other states
Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, practices, and design, with the ability to apply this expertise to project-related issues
Familiarity with AASHTO and USACE design manuals
Familiarity with the International Building Code and ASCE 7-16 and/or 7-22
Familiarity with the design and construction of shallow and deep foundations, ground improvement methods, retaining structures, earth structures, and skills to assist senior staff with project management
Proficiency in discipline-specific design and analysis software (e.g., Slide2, Settle 3, LPILE, APILE, SHAFT, GRLWEAP, MFAD, Shoring Suite, DeepEx, Mathcad, gINT, BoreDM, Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and ArcGIS )
Strong analytical skills and sound judgment in evaluating engineering problems and making decisions
Ability to work independently, accountability, attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities
Willingness to work in the field up to an estimated 25% of the time, with occasional travel
Effective communication skills
Must be able to carry up to 50 lbs. regularly and up to 80 lbs. occasionally with or without accommodation, sometimes over substantial distances
Valid Driver’s License required
Salary Range:
The starting salary for this position is $85,000, with final compensation determined based on years of experience, qualifications , location, and licensing status.
