The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is recruiting a Police Communications Operator. The main purpose of the Police Communications Operator (PCO) is to facilitate officer safety by monitoring police radio transmissions and utilizing all communications equipment. Personnel are required to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, have excellent communications skills and to be a self- starter. Employees are responsible for receiving and processing telephone calls using a multi-line telephone system, utilizing Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) to record and track all law enforcement communications and movement. Operating 700 MHZ statewide multi-channel radio system and utilizing National Crime Information Center database (NCIC) to assist Law Enforcement in the field. Personnel will also be responsible for monitoring and responding to ELERTS, MDOT MTA’s multi reporting tool used to assist with providing customer service. Employees may also be assigned duties such as miscellaneous filing and other clerical and typing assignments required in conjunction with the position.

This position is located in Baltimore City, Maryland.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate or a General Education Diploma (GED).

Experience: None

SUBSTITUTION INFORMATION:
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policies, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

NOTE:
Applicants will be required to pass a typing test (35 words per minute) to determine the adequacy of their qualifications.
Applicants must pass a job skill assessment.

EXAMINATION:
If you meet the qualifications, you will be notified to take the written examination on a date to be determined at 6 Saint Paul Street, 5th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Employees in this position will be required to attend and pass a two-day NCIC CN1 course, after completion of this course personnel will be certified in NCIC.
2. Employees in this position must be able to work 40 hours per week and must be able to work variable shifts, evenings, holidays, and weekends based on the needs of the Maryland Transit Administration Police.
3. Employees may be subject to emergency on-call 24 hours a day and may be required to maintain a reliable communication link (telephone or pager) for the purpose of emergency call back requirements; the work is performed indoors however; employees will be assigned to satellite sites upon the needs of the department.
4. Eligible applicants may be subject to a background investigation under Federal and State laws and regulations. A conviction is not an automatic disqualification to employment. Erroneous, misleading or fraudulent information on the application is sufficient grounds for rejection from the hiring process, removal from the list of eligible, withdrawal of an offer for employment or immediate discharge.
5. Employees in this classification are subject to pre-employment drug testing and substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations 49-Federal Department of Transportation Drug Alcohol Testing Protocols and Federal Transit Administration Alcohol Testing Rules and Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

Licenses & Certifications

Employees in this classification are assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

1. Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS),

2. National Crime Information Center (NCIC)

3. Maryland Electronic Telecommunication Resources System (METERS) certifications.
